‘Black Widow’ Leak Teases Marvel Fans That Natasha May Have Survived ‘Avengers: Endgame’ After All
Scarlett Johansson is getting ready for her first solo outing as Natasha Romanoff in Marvel’s upcoming film, Black Widow. The character has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Iron Man 2 and is set to kick off the studio’s highly anticipated Phase 4. Although Natasha was killed off in Avengers: Endgame, new photos from the set of Black Widow tease that she may have survived her fall on Vormir after all.
‘Black Widow’ leak: Is Natasha alive?
Filming for Black Widow started a few months ago and is expected to wrap up in the coming weeks. We have already seen a few leaked photos surface from the set, but a new image hints that the film will be set after the events in Endgame.
According to We Got This Covered, the leaked photo shows Black Widow rocking a ponytail, the exact hairstyle she donned in Endgame. The image has sparked theories that Natasha may have survived the war with Thanos, but how that happened remains a huge mystery.
What’s interesting is that Natasha has sported a completely new look in all of her appearances in the MCU. The fact that Black Widow features her looking the same as she did in Endgame could have significance.
Is it proof that Natasha is alive? Not necessarily. But she would not be the only Marvel character to be resurrected in recent years.
Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) have both returned from the dead in previous projects, not to mention that Marvel brought most of our favorite heroes back after Thanos’s snap.
That said, there is another explanation for why Natasha looks the same as she did in Endgame.
‘Black Widow’ setting might offer clues
It is possible that Black Widow is set at the same time as Endgame, which would explain Natasha’s similar look.
There was a gap of several years between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, and Black Widow could easily shed light on what happened before Earth’s Mightiest Heroes brought everyone back.
Exactly when the film would end is unclear, but it would definitely help satisfy fans who thought Natasha took a back seat in Endgame.
This approach would also mean that Natasha did die on Vormir while retrieving the Soul Stone with Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner).
We also know that the movie will feature a few flashbacks, including finally telling us what happened between Natasha and Hawkeye in Budapest — something that has been teased for a long time.
So it is possible that the film jumps around a little as it explores Natasha’s past and gives her a proper sendoff.
What about Robert Downey Jr.’s cameo?
With Black Widow being set close to the events in Endgame, fans have been wondering if Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Iron Man one last time.
In the final scenes of Endgame, Tony Stark gave his life to destroy Thanos once and for all, taking himself out of future movies in the MCU and allowing other characters to take the lead.
We did not expect Downey to appear in any more Marvel films, but Black Widow’s setting opened the door for a potential appearance.
The good news is that we will see Iron Man appear in Black Widow. The bad news is that it won’t be any new footage.
Instead, filmmakers are using old footage — just like they did in Spider-Man: Far From Home — to bring Tony back to life. Only this time the scene will come from Captain America: Civil War.
The scene in question, however, was not included in the final cut of Civil War, so it will be new to fans who have not watched the deleted scenes. The clip is at the end of the movie, when Tony urges Natasha to run away, sending Captain America and everyone else into hiding.
That said, there are also rumors that Downey will reprise the role in a show called Ironheart, though nothing official has been confirmed.
Black Widow is set to open in theaters in 2020.
