‘Blue Bloods’ Star Tom Selleck Was Also in a Video Game
Tom Selleck is definitely a star with staying power. After more than five decades in show business, he’s still a household name. He’s most recently known for his role as Frank Reagan on the CBS series Blue Bloods. But people who are familiar with Frank’s dignified air of authority may be surprised to discover that Selleck has one credit to his name that isn’t nearly so mature. The gruff but fair police commissioner that viewers love so much once played a character in a video game.
Tom Selleck’s career has been long and varied
For over 50 years, Selleck has been a busy and beloved actor. He’s one of those stars who has been in so many well-known movies and television series that people have a hard time explaining where they know him from. His credits include television shows such as the soap opera The Young And The Restless, the series Magnum, PI, and Marcus Welby, MD. He also played a guest role on Friends, which won him a whole new generation of fans.
Along the way, Selleck mostly stuck to television roles, though he had a few notable exceptions, such as the hit movie Three Men and a Baby. But unlike some stars, he didn’t do voice-over work for animated movies. He did very little acting in shows for kids, and it never seemed to be something he was interested in.
It’s not like Selleck needed to explore working in animation. His career was plenty busy without getting involved in voice acting, so he never branched out into that world. Except, of course, for one single role.
He played this animated character
In 2007, Disney Animation released Meet The Robinsons. The movie was a time-traveling adventure about a 12-year-old boy named Lewis. At one point Lewis travels into the future, where he meets a family that fascinates him. The father of the family, Cornelius, is out of town, and Lewis asks his son, Wilbur, what he looks like. Wilbur lies and says Cornelius looks like Tom Selleck.
The joke, of course, is that Cornelius looks nothing like the handsome Selleck, but more like a goofy inventor. But when the writers came up with the joke it gave them the idea to offer Selleck the role. He must have liked the idea because he agreed to play the part of Cornelius. After all, you could almost say that the part was written just for him. For the first time, Selleck worked as a voice actor, playing the part of Cornelius.
The movie got good reviews, and its popularity led to Selleck’s next unusual move in his career.
The movie led to a video game
Later that year, a video game based on the movie Meet The Robinsons was released. Selleck was called upon to play the part of Cornelius again for the game. Although his part is small, you can hear Selleck’s unmistakable voice, reading a message to Lewis to set up the plot of the game. It’s an unusual credit for this long-time television and movie star. He’d never done voice-over work until Meet The Robinsons, and by the time he was done he had voiced a character in an animated movie and a video game.
You might not expect it by looking at the dignified patriarch Selleck portrays now on Blue Bloods. But it’s true – the same actor that gives Frank Reagan his mature gravitas also played a character in an animated movie and the video game that followed. I guess not even the police commissioner can be serious all the time.
