‘Blue Bloods’: This Man Is Responsible for Portraying Cops Accurately on the Show

Blue Bloods is one of the hottest TV shows around and became an almost instant hit for CBS when it originally debuted in late 2010. Fans love it for a variety of reasons, including the talented cast, immersive, dramatic storyline, and a commitment to accuracy that goes well beyond the standards set by many cop shows.

The show premiered on September 24th, 2010, and has been on the air ever since. Blue Bloods follows the story of the Reagan family, police offers with the NYPD. The show not only traces the family dynamics at work, including relations between the patriarch Frank Reagan, played by iconic actor Tom Selleck, and his sons, but it goes into detail about the police work involved in various cases.

Blue Bloods has been praised by critics and audiences alike for the way the show treats morally tough issues, and in the realism with which it addresses police work. In the years that the show has been on the air, it has consistently been ranked as one of the best shows on TV and continues to earn new fans with every new episode.

How realistic is ‘Blue Bloods’?

One reason for the success of Blue Bloods can be traced to one man. James Nuciforo is a New York City police officer who has served the city for nearly twenty-five years. Nuciforo serves as the technical advisor on Blue Bloods and provides the show with advice on everything from the jargon that NYC cops and detectives use on a day to day basis to the ins and outs of procedural work. The creators of Blue Bloods takes Nuciforo’s expertise seriously – according to Nuciforo, the show uses a good amount of the information he provides them.

Nuciforo’s process for proofing each episode is time-consuming. He is provided with a copy of the script for each episode well ahead of time, then combs through the pages to see what needs to be added in or taken away in order to provide the show with the highest level of realism. In fact, Nuciforo has said that as an example, if he’s given a script with fifty-six pages, he will add anywhere from five to ten pages of extra dialogue, all in order to make the show that much more authentic.

How do the actors feel about Nuciforo?

Blue Bloods has received such positive feedback from critics and fans that it’s hard for the actors involved not to feel grateful for Nuciforo’s input. Tom Selleck, who plays Frank Reagan on the show, stated in an interview that when he meets police officers on the street, they often tell him how much they love the show, and to him, that’s the ultimate compliment.

All of the actors on the show have gained a deeper understanding of police procedure as a result of their work on Blue Bloods. Many of the cast members practiced at a gun range prior to filming, and Donnie Wahlberg, who plays Danny Reagan on the show, spent time with real police officers on the job to get a better understanding of interrogation procedures and the energy with which the officers carry themselves.

Fans of Blue Bloods can catch up with the Reagan family every Friday night at 9 PM on CBS – season 9 is currently airing, and while season 10 is as yet unconfirmed, it is likely, due to the success that the show continues to enjoy. Tom Selleck recently revealed that while none of the actors are currently contracted for another season, the interest is definitely there. Hopefully, fans will be able to enjoy the drama and adventure of the Reagans for years to come!
