‘Blue Bloods’: What Was It Really Like to Film Eddie’s First Reagan Family Dinner?
Eddie Janko (Vanessa Ray) and Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) have been partners as police officers for years. Their chemistry has been pretty undeniable so fans have been anxiously waiting for them to realize their feelings for each other. The two finally got engaged in Season 8’s finale and Eddie joined the Reagans for family dinner. What was it really like to film that? Here is everything you need to know.
Only Will Estes knew Jamie was going to propose to surprise Vanessa Ray
It turns out that Eddie Janko wasn’t the only one surprised by Jamie Reagan’s proposal. Vanessa Ray was kept out of the loop as well to get a genuine reaction. However, Will Estes did have some hesitation about the two characters moving forward romantically.
“Will was cautious, at first, and rightly so,” Blue Bloods showrunner Kevin Wade told Entertainment Weekly “because he had the fear that, frankly, he had every right to have: ‘Are we going to be playing scenes where we’re holding hands, gazing into each other across a checkered tablecloth in a dimly lit restaurant?’ I assured him we had no interest in writing those stories, and I know he has no interest in playing them.”
Estes said that they have been “having a lot of fun” with their characters being engaged and having Eddie join the family table, according to Country Living. “It’s been great,” Ray said. “It’s been very fun to see your other side of the world.”
Bridget Moynahan said the table has a ‘new female energy’ with Eddie
Estes also talked about what it’s like filming that family dinner scene and why it’s so important. “That family dinner is really a centerpiece for the show, and it’s where so many interpersonal relationships sort of play out,” he said. “A lot of times, it’s the only scene in the whole episode where we are interacting with all the other actors, especially all at once. And to have Vanessa there for that, it’s great.”
Bridget Moynahan also opened up to Country Living about what it’s like to have a new person at the Reagan table. “What’s really great is that we have Vanessa [Ray], who at the end of last season, her character and Will Estes’ character got engaged,” said Moynahan. “So we have a new female energy at the table and she’s such a vibrant charismatic woman and such a pleasure to be working with.”
Since Eddie has joined the family table she has gotten close to the Reagans for the better. But she has also butt heads with Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) in Season 9 when she tries to help out with his kids. It should be interesting how the family dynamics change even further with the new addition of Eddie.
