Bob Odenkirk Doesn’t Promise Good Ending for ‘Better Call Saul’ Character in Season 5

Fans of the highly successful show Better Call Saul worried that the show will end after a mere six seasons. But they’ve also been growing increasingly stressed about the fate of one of the show’s characters: Gene Takovic.

Questions about that particular character’s future bubbled to the top of the list of fan concerns following the show’s season four debut. That particular episode heavily featured Gene.

During it, he was taken to the hospital to have been treated for a severe panic attack which worsened as the hospital staff started asking personal questions that aren’t easy to answer when you’re doing your absolute best to hide from the police. The way the storyline was laid out has fans wondering if Gene’s past and law enforcement will soon catch up to him and if it’s possible for his character to have a good ending.

Gene Takovic is an incredibly interesting character if for no other reason than he is a character of a character. He is another aspect of the main character: Jimmy McGill.

While this certainly isn’t the first alias the character has used during the course of the show, he’s also known as Saul Goodman, this is the alias that has really gotten fans excited. They hope that with the introduction of the Gene Takovic alias, some sort of redemption might be coming Jimmy’s way.

The struggle “Gene” had at the hospital provided great insight into the character and felt like a foreshadowing of how Jimmy is starting to fall apart.

The actor, Bob Odenkirk, who plays Gene/Saul/Jimmy, said that he felt Gene’s experiences indicated just how much pressure the character is under and how he’s handling it.

“I don’t think he can stand it,” he said. “I think he’s cracking.”

He also admitted that he is as clueless as the fans with regards to the character’s future on the “Better Call Saul.”

“It will be interesting to see. I don’t know how we get there.”

Peter Gould, the series co-creator loves the Gene Takovic character. He was happy to share his thoughts about the character with Entertainment Weekly.

“In some ways, Gene is very enigmatic,’ Gould said. “In some ways, he’s the opposite of Saul Goodman because he speaks so very little, he’s so afraid. But I’m fascinated by that situation and by the question of: is there still a chance of redemption or ray of light in this guy’s life after all of the terrible things that he’s done, now that he’s run away and hidden himself in Omaha.”

One of the fascinating things about Gene Takovic is how the events that take place during Better Call Saul will play out on Breaking Bad. At some point, the timelines of the two shows will converge.

Many feel that the timelines of the two shows are about 1.5 to 2 years away from merging. The fifth season of Better Call Saul has been promised and there’s speculation of a sixth season, which fans predict will be the final.

While there’s no proof that “Gene” will help redeem Saul, Odenkirk, believes that whatever happens on Breaking Bad will play a big role in how the character ends. It’s his belief that this isn’t a character that the show’s writers intend to back burner any time soon.

He told The Wrap: “I think they intend to take that character somewhere and land it.”

While it looks like Gene Takovic will have a complete character arc, there is no indication that the arc will end with the character enjoying a happy ever after, or even happy for now, ending.
