The Freeform series stars Katie Stevens as Jane Sloan, an aspiring writer at Scarlet Magazine. She lives with her best friend, Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy), a Scarlet assistant who wants to get into fashion. Their trio is completed by Kat Edison (Aisha Dee), who works for the company’s social media marketing team.

While these three are at the center of it all, there are a few other primary characters. Melora Hardin (The Office) is the editor-in-chief of Scarlet, Jacqueline Carlyle, who is there for them through thick and thin. Sam Page is Richard Hunter, a Scarlet board member, who dates Sutton. Other co-workers include writer Alex Crawford (Matt Ward) and Oliver Grayson (Stephen Conrad Moore).

Here’s what happened in Season 1

In the first season, all of the girls are striving for new things, personally and professionally. Jane is an assistant who has just been promoted to a writer. She wants to make a difference and write meaningful stories, and, at the end of the season, she leaves Scarlet for Incite.

Meanwhile, Sutton becomes an assistant in the fashion department. She ends her secret affair with Richard and briefly dates Alex. Kat falls for a woman, and ends up questioning everything she ever knew about herself. She eventually follows Adena to South America on a whim.

‘The Bold Type’ Season 2 recap

In the second season, things continue to fall every which way. Adena and Kat continue to date, even opening up their relationship for a time, but eventually break up. Sutton attempts to take new strides in her career, all while trying to ignore that Richard is seeing someone else.

Jane, however, has the most going on. She loses her job at Incite and tries to go back to Scarlet, but Jacqueline won’t take her back right away. She dates a doctor, Ben, and attempts to freelance for a while. Eventually, she is hired by at Scarlet and breaks up with Ben to be with another writer, Ryan.

What happened in Season 3?

In case you couldn’t tell, there’s a pattern here: A lot of ups and downs befall these young women. Season 3 sees Sutton and Richard move in together, while she considers pursuing a career as a designer. Meanwhile, Kat runs for city council, falls for her campaign manager, and loses the election — oh, and Adena returns.

Jane typically writes for the print side of Scarlet, which is run by Jacqueline but is frequently thwarted by the new head of digital, Patrick. Jacqueline and Jane work on a difficult story throughout the season, all while Ryan travels for his book tour. The finale sees the girls turn up at the office, confused as everything is being packed up.

Season 4 of ‘The Bold Type’ begins in 2020

The Bold Type was renewed for a fourth season in May 2019, while the third season was still airing. Showrunner Amanda Lasher departed the series with the Season 3 finale, and her duties have been picked up by writer Wendy Straker Hauser.

So far, we know very little about the upcoming season, other that it will premiere much earlier in the year than previous seasons, with the first episode airing on Jan. 23, 2020. We can presume from the above image that we will learn what happened to Jacqueline (was she let go?) and what the women are planning to do to amend it.
