Bradley Cooper: Always a Groomsman, Never the Groom?

The Oscar and Golden Globe Nominee whose co-stars tend to take the spotlight.

Bradley Cooper, the Oscar-nominated director, and actor behind the instant classic A Star Is Born, while often in close proximity to those who take home the most prestigious film awards  – Oscars and Golden Globes – has yet to win either. As for the latter category, he has been passed over for nominations in films that his co-stars gained critical recognition (and took home a prized trophy) for.

From American Hustle and American Sniper to Silver Linings Playbook and A Star Is Born, when it comes to Bradley Cooper’s most known roles, he’s often standing beside the victor come the special day: the night of the award ceremony.

‘American Hustle:’ Cooper’s American dream squashed

In American Hustle, Bradley Cooper plays FBI Agent Richie Dimaso: the man trying to take down Irving Rosenfeld (portrayed by Christian Bale) for forgery and loan-sharking. However, when he falls for Rosenfeld’s fellow forger and seductress Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), his mission gets a little messy. Jennifer Lawrence plays Irv’s wife, who, with a strong Staten Island accent and stern beliefs, may just take everyone down!

While Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence both took home Golden Globes for their performances in the film – Lead Actress and Supporting Actress respectively – Bradley Cooper was merely one in an entire ensemble recognized as an “Outstanding Cast” member, according to the Screen Actors Guild.

The film also took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture in a Musical or Comedy. While Cooper was nominated for an Oscar in his role, it became one of many nominations that did not come to fruition.

‘American Sniper:’ another misfire

While receiving critical acclaim for his work in this Clint Eastwood war drama, Bradley Cooper would, once again, watch someone else take home an Oscar for this movie.

Bradley Cooper was nominated for his role; however, American Sniper would go on to receive only one Oscar: Best Sound Editing (Bub Asman and Alan Robert Murray). Eastwood was nominated for Best Director, and the film was nominated for Best Picture; however, Best Picture went to 12 Years a Slave, and Alfonso Cuaron took home the Best Director award for Gravity.

‘Silver Linings Playbook:’ so much for a silver lining

In Silver Linings Playbook, Bradley Cooper plays a man who loses his wife, and after spending time in a mental institution, must move back in with his parents (portrayed by Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver).

Bradley Cooper meets Tiffany (portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence), who offers to help him reconnect with his wife in exchange for one small favor.

While Jennifer Lawrence took home an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild for her performance, Bradley Cooper was nominated for all three but lost out in each.

The Silver Lining: Jennifer Lawrence won her first Oscar, and would go on to star in some pretty epic films (Joy, American Hustle, Passengers).

‘A Star Is Born’…and one is dismissed

At this year’s Oscars, Bradley Cooper was nominated for Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay, while his co-star, Lady Gaga, was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Original Song. While Gaga took home the award for Best Original Song, Cooper lost Best Actor to Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Best Adapted Screenplay to BlacKkKlansman.

While we’re sure Bradley Cooper has been thrilled to see his co-stars win awards for their performances, it feels like his turn is a little bit overdue. So far, Cooper has been nominated for four Oscars and three Golden Globes. Here’s to hoping 2019 brings in a win for the multi-talented performer.
