‘Britain’s Got Talent’: Where is Susan Boyle Now?
It’s been almost ten years since Susan Boyle shocked and delighted the audience of Britain’s Got Talent with her stunning rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables. But even a decade later, the impact she had on the judges, the audience, and millions of people who later viewed the YouTube clip of her amazing performance cannot be overstated. With one single singing competition audition, Susan Boyle became a symbol of inspiration for people around the world.
Who is Susan Boyle?
The Scottish born singer was born on April 1, 1961 as the youngest of four brothers and five sisters. Boyle’s mom was 45 when she gave birth to Susan, and doctors later diagnosed the young girl with a learning disability because of her mother’s advanced maternal age and oxygen deprivation at birth. However, in 2012 Boyle received a new diagnosis: Asperger’s Syndrome and an abnormally high IQ.
Susan Boyle began her singing career at a young age, taking vocal lessons and singing at church functions. She appeared on the British television show My Kind of People in 1995, singing “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from Jesus Christ, Superstar.
Before her now-famous Britain’s Got Talent appearance, Susan Boyle even recorded a professional demo with three tracks and entered several other singing competitions locally. At her mother’s urging, Boyle decided to try out for Simon Cowell’s show and that’s when everything changed.
Susan Boyle defied expectations on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’
Susan Boyle doesn’t look like your typical pop star. When she took the stage for her audition on April 11, 2009, most of the audience wasn’t expecting much. She was a little overweight, middle-aged, and dowdy. But then her vocal performance proved that physical appearance has no bearing on talent. Judge Amanda Holden said that Boyle’s audition was the “biggest wake-up call ever.”
Before her audition, Boyle said she was inspired by professional singer Elaine Paige and wanted to be as famous as her one day. After? Paige called Susan Boyle “a role model for everyone who has a dream,” and even said she’d love to do a duet with her.
From obscurity to superstar
Just a little over six months after her Britain’s Got Talent appearance, Susan Boyle released her first album called “I Dreamed a Dream,” which included several cover songs. It sold more than 700,000 copies in the United States just in the first week, making it one of the most successful debuts in years.
In July 2010, Boyle released a Christmas album called “The Gift.” Several other albums followed in the years after. In 2013, she made her movie debut in the film The Christmas Candle and sang an original song. She also played herself in several documentaries about her life including, I Dreamed a Dream: The Susan Boyle Story, Susan Boyle: An Unlikely Superstar, and There’s Something About Susan.
What is Susan Boyle doing now?
These days, Susan Boyle is still making beautiful music and enjoying her life. She lives alone (she never married) in a home she purchased with the money she earned from her new career. In September 2018, Boyle returned to the show that made her famous when she agreed to participate as a contestant on America’s Got Talent: The Champions. She sang “Wild Horses” from one of her albums.
Susan Boyle taught the world that you should never judge a book by its cover. Sources speculate that the judges intentionally played up Boyle’s unkempt appearance for that first audition on Britain’s Got Talent because they anticipated the audience’s reaction. Her performance was a message: looks aren’t everything.
These days, Susan Boyle is looking and feeling better than ever. She recently started eating healthier and lost 50 pounds in an effort to control her diabetes. It’s clear that no matter what Susan Boyle looks like, her loveliness shines brightly.
