The Broadway Star Who Covered Taylor Swift for Her Birthday: ‘There’s Nobody Else Like Her’

Just days after dropping her ninth studio album, Evermore, musician Taylor Swift turned 31. The singer marked the occasion with an alternate single release — a far cry from her 2019 celebration, which involved a Jingle Ball performance, a cat cake, and a celeb-filled party. But in 2020, she got a gift from a famous Broadway star.

Just months after her surprise July 2020 album, Folklore, Swift dropped yet another record in a remarkably similar fashion. She continued working with collaborators Aaron Dessner (of The National), Jack Antonoff, and “William Bowery” (her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn) to create Evermore.

“To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs,” Swift tweeted on December 10, 2020. “To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in.”

The album’s timing coincided with her 31st birthday

When she released Folklore, Swift explained that she had spent the early months of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic writing and recording, choosing to drop the album when she was done. But with Evermore, Swift timed the release with a special occasion: Her “reverse” Golden birthday.

“Ever since I was 13, I’ve been excited about turning 31 because it’s my lucky number backwards, which is why I wanted to surprise you with this now,” Swift wrote on Twitter, speaking to her fans. “You’ve all been so caring, supportive and thoughtful on my birthdays and so this time I thought I would give you something!”

Kristin Chenoweth reviewed the album on Twitter

Many of Swift’s close friends responded to Evermore. Long-time bestie Selena Gomez shared an Instagram Story, as did Cara Delevingne. The women of Haim (who are featured on the track “No Body, No Crime”) chimed in. Additionally, celebrities without a direct affiliation shared their praise.

Among those was Kristin Chenoweth, known for TV series like Pushing Daisies and films such as Four Christmases and Holidate. “Ok. I’ve taken it in. I’m mind blown and mystified. This is a huge album,” she tweeted at Swift. “What a massive undertaking. Amazing. There’s nobody else like her. She’s so special.”

The ‘Wicked’ star performed a ‘Folkore’ track

Whether you recognize Chenoweth from TV shows like Glee or Broadway productions such as Wicked, you’re likely familiar with her musical talent. Following her song-by-song review of Evermore, she celebrated Swift’s big day with a rendition of the Folklore track “Mad Woman.”

The performer shared the video on her social media profiles. “In honor of @taylorswift13’s birthday, had to cover my favorite song off of #folklore… “mad woman” and “the 1″ have been on repeat since it came out (before #evermore) happy birthday, TS!” Chenoweth wrote to the singer.
