‘Broke’: Javier and Elizabeth Find the Courage to Ask Their Rich Friends to Repay a Loan
This week’s episode of Broke shows Javier and Elizabeth (Natasha Leggero and Jaime Camil) in a very uncomfortable situation. Here’s everything Showbiz Cheat Sheet knows about Broke this week.
Javier and Elizabeth are strapped for cash
In Broke Season 1, Episode 3 (titled “The Dance”), Javier and Elizabeth are in a situation that is foreign to them. The couple, who are used to living a lavish lifestyle, need of cash. Unfortunately, that means they’ll have to swallow their pride and beg their friends to repay a loan. The episode’s title suggests the duo will dance around the issue and have a difficult time asking for the money.
It will be interesting to see how Javier and Elizabeth’s friends react and if they will remain friends after this. Although this is a comedy and meant to make viewers laugh, there is a deeper message here. One of the best ways to test a friendship is to see how your friend reacts when you face tough times. If your so-called friend ghosts you when the going gets tough, you have your answer.
What happened during ‘Broke’ Episodes 1 and 2
Before running into financial difficulty, Javier and Elizabeth didn’t have to worry about money. Elizabeth told Jackie (Pauley Perrette) she used to give large sums of money to the homeless. “I like not thinking about money,” Elizabeth says. “And having so much that whenever you find hundred-dollar bills in your pockets you just give them to homeless people and watch them light up with joy.”
Now, Javier and Elizabeth are living with Jackie and her son, Sammy, in their childhood home. Episode 1 begins with Javier and Elizabeth showing up on Jackie’s doorstep. They tell her they’re just visiting, but the truth is later revealed: they’re broke and need a place to stay. Jackie refers to them as “Aunt Hoity and Uncle Toity” when she’s talking to Sammy.
Javier and Elizabeth became broke after Javier’s father cut off financial support. He became frustrated with Javier because of his reckless spending habits. Some of Javier’s purchases include a pyramid and an extravagant coming-out party for his butler. Although the couple is broke, Javier looks on the bright side, saying, “I have lost all of my money. Bright side? I’m still married to the love of my life.”
Why Pauley Perrette decided to join the ‘Broke’ cast
Pauley Perrette enjoyed a successful run on the hit CBS drama NCIS, however she decided to leave after 15 years of playing forensic scientist Abby Sciuto. Perrette told TV Insider she joined the Broke cast instead of retiring because she wanted to do a comedy.
Before deciding to switch gears, Perrette told the publication she considered hanging up her acting hat. “I was going to drink beer with my three dogs and watch television,” Perrette told TV Insider. “My family, friends and pastor didn’t think it was the best idea. I didn’t even want to play a mom, but now Antonio is the center of my universe. He brightens my life!”
