BTS’s album ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ was certified platinum

BTS released their album Love Yourself: Answer on Aug. 24, 2018. The album served as a completion to their acclaimed Love Yourself album series. With Love Yourself: Her, Love Yourself: Tear, and Love Yourself: Answer, the members of BTS explored the different types of love including self-love.

In November 2018, Love Yourself: Answer was certified gold by the RIAA with half a million units recorded. With this accomplishment, Love Yourself: Answer became the first Korean album to ever be recognized by the RIAA.

In January 2020, the RIAA recognized BTS for achieving a platinum certification with Love Yourself: Answer. For an album to achieve a platinum certification, the album must record at least 1 million units in the U.S. A unit is equal to one album sale, 1,500 audio or video streams from the album, or 10 tracks sold from the album.

Love Yourself: Answer is BTS’s first-ever platinum album in the U.S. BTS is also the first and only Korean act to have an album certified platinum by the RIAA.

BTS has multiple platinum singles

While Love Yourself: Answer is the first of BTS’s albums to go platinum, the group has multiple platinum singles. In November 2018, their 2017 single “Mic Drop” was certified platinum in the U.S. This was BTS’s first platinum single.

BTS released their single “Boy With Luv” and EP Map of the Soul: Persona in April 2019. By June 2019, the RIAA announced “Boy With Luv” achieved a platinum certification with 1 million recorded units. In August 2019, Map of the Soul: Persona was certified gold by the RIAA.

When the RIAA announced Love Yourself: Answer achieved platinum certification, the organization announced BTS’s single “Idol” was also certified platinum. BTS now has three singles and an album certified platinum in the U.S.

BTS will make history at the 2020 Grammy Awards

The announcement that BTS achieved a platinum album and another platinum single in the U.S. comes at the heels of another impressive accomplishment. On Jan. 23, the Recording Academy confirmed BTS will perform at the 2020 Grammy Awards.

As of right now, BTS will perform in a collaboration stage as part of the “Old Town Road All-Stars” medley with Lil Nas X and others. Some fans also suspect BTS could debut their new single “Black Swan” in a solo stage, but that has yet to be confirmed by Big Hit Entertainment or the Recording Academy.

By performing at the awards show, BTS will become the first Korean act to ever perform at the Grammy Awards. Already, the group was the first Korean act to ever attend or present at the awards show.

All of this is happening just a few weeks before BTS releases their highly-anticipated album Map of the Soul: 7. Already, the album broke Map of the Soul: Persona‘s previous record of first-week pre-orders.

While Map of the Soul: Persona sold 2.685 million pre-orders in its first five days, Map of the Soul: 7 sold 3.42 million stock pre-orders Jan. 9 through Jan. 15. These kind of sales combined with BTS’s upcoming history-making performance have Map of the Soul: 7 ready to become BTS’s biggest comeback yet and another platinum album.
