BTS: RM Expands on an Old Concept and It’s Perfect for the Post-‘Love Yourself’ Era

The seven members of BTS — RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook — have displayed a level of growth unimaginable to most. Ever since their debut in 2013, the South Korean band worked hard to achieve new levels of success within the K-pop industry and beyond. BTS has also shed a few concepts, allowing themselves — and ARMY — to learn something new every step of the way. Now, with the next album comeback on the horizon, BTS leader RM delved deeper into an old concept about chasing dreams to fit the post-Love Yourself era.

BTS’s RM talks about chasing your dreams

Over the years, BTS released multiple songs about chasing your dreams. In “No More Dream,” the group’s debut track, the song’s lyrics spoke to youths about discovering their true passions rather than following the dreams pressured by parents and society. Similarly, “N.O.” encouraged individuals to follow what makes them happy, as opposed to being captured in another person’s dreams. And more recently, “Dream Glow,” the collaboration with Charli XCX on BTS World, is all about chasing your dreams.

Meanwhile, many fans resonated with Suga’s 2018 New Year’s quote. The “Seesaw” singer wished fans a happy holiday, hoping for great things to happen in the new year and for all BTS to find their dreams. However, Suga noted that it’s fine even if you don’t have a dream, as it’s not always possible to have one. “Just be happy, that’s all that matters,” he said.

Then in Paper Magazine’s Break the Internet issue on Nov. 19 — in which the BTS members were captivated by the legendary Lisa Frank — RM expanded on the group’s view on chasing what inspires you the most. And not only does BTS want their fans to achieve their dreams, but they also want to be the guiding light that helps fans get through it all.

“We just hope that we can be of help. We did say that you don’t have to dream, but living a life without dreams or hope would be quite dim, wouldn’t it?” RM said. “I think everyone needs motivation and milestones in order to move. Whatever that may be, we want to be of help, even a little, for them to move forward.”

Of course, fans might have also noticed that RM’s statement reflects a quote said by the God of Destruction during the Love Yourself tour, which ultimately delivers the overall message from the era.

“Please use me,” RM said at Citi Field on Oct. 6. 2018. “Please use BTS to love yourself. Because you guys taught me how to love myself.”

If anyone could break a record in achieving their dreams, it would be BTS. So when speaking with Paper Magazine, the septet was kind enough to share what they’re aspiring to do moving forward. And for the most part, it seems the group wants to continue as they are now, making strides as music artists.

“I want to head in a straight path without losing sight of what I feel now,” RM said. “[I want to] keep our passion burning bright and walk straight.”

“I wouldn’t want anything more than to keep doing music and performances just like now,” Jungkook said.

“To stay healthy!” J-Hope said. “So that we can keep doing what we’re doing now!!!

Meanwhile, V and Jimin echoed the hopes of their bandmates. However, they both put an extra emphasis on achieving new lengths of success each time they uncover something new.

“They’re not new dreams, but dreams that we never imagined could achieve,” V said. “I’d like to keep them going.”

“I know that many people are cheering for us for who we are now,” Jimin said. “I think about how those people would love seeing our new, better music and performances. What I’m trying to say is, my dream is to show them more performances and better music for a long, long time.”

Then the eldest two hyungs, Jin and Suga, expressed the desire to achieve their vision of happiness.

“I would like to have a hobby since I never had one,” Suga said. “I would love to have a lifelong hobby.”

“I talk to Producer Bang quite often about how we should work together for a happy life,” Jin said. “How to live happily…I think about that frequently.”
