Caitlyn Jenner Was Nominated for Worst Actor for This Movie

Caitlyn Jenner is an absolute icon but not everything she’s done has been successful. Jenner was once nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award (Razzie) for poor acting. Let’s take a look at the time she appeared in a notorious box office bomb co-starring a famous band.

Why the Village People’s only movie bombed

Firstly, some background. This all starts with the Village People. In retrospect, the Village People are remembered as a relic of the 1970s. That doesn’t mean they didn’t try to be relevant during the 1980s. The most infamous element of their 1980s career was a movie musical called Can’t Stop the Music. It’s a fictionalized account of the band’s origin, and Jenner plays a fictitious lawyer.

According to Forbes, Can’t Stop the Music grossed $2 million against a budget of $20 million. It’s easy to attribute the film’s financial failure to the end of the disco trend. During the early 1980s, the genre was no longer relevant and it would take some time for it to be revived.

Caitlyn Jenner lost the Razzie to this celebrity

Sometimes, flop movies become critical darlings but Can’t Stop the Music was not one of them. According to Yahoo! Entertainment, Jenner’s performance was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor. Jenner publicly identified as male at the time, so the nomination was not an attack on her gender identity. Jenner lost the award to Neil Diamond — another celebrity who is not known for acting — for his role in The Jazz Singer.

Why a member of the Village People doesn’t think Caitlyn Jenner deserved the Razzie nomination

Randy Jones, the cowboy from the Village People’s original lineup, had a good time working with Jenner. He said Jenner was “the nicest, the most American, the purest-acting human being.” For example, Jones recalled how Jenner bought him a pair of aviator sunglasses, praising her generosity. In addition, Jones feels Jenner was not worthy of a Worst Actor nomination.

“Well, I can absolutely swear to this: When Can’t Stop the Music came out, starring Valerie Perrine and [the] Village People and [Caitlyn] Jenner, the reviews for most of us were not good,” Jones recalled. “[Caitlyn] was not recommended or commended for [her] acting skills. But I can tell you one thing: Caitlyn Jenner is the best actress in the world!” Jones explained his reasoning.

“Because for the 62, 63, 64 years before she presented herself as Caitlyn Jenner to the world, she had everybody convinced that she was Bruce Jenner, an Olympic athlete, one of the nicest, best guys in the world, a father, a husband,” Jones said. “That takes the ultimate skill of any actor. So I can say Caitlyn Jenner is a great actress. That [Golden Raspberry nomination] was not deserved!”

Since the 1980s, Can’t Stop the Music has become a cult classic among fans of campy movies and disco music. Can’t Stop the Music has been vindicated — just like Jenner’s acting ability.
