This Is Why Camilla Parker Bowles’ Family Is Dreading the Day Prince Charles Becomes King

Though Duchess Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are currently in the midst of their own firestorm with the British press and public –there was a time when Duchess Camila Parker Bowles and Prince Charles were the talk of the town. Before Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s ill-fated marriage in 1981, the future Crowned King was in love with the Duchess of Cornwall.

However, the British Royal Family, who was lightyears behind modernity at the time, didn’t believe that Parker-Bowles was the right match for the prince. (Mostly, because she wasn’t virginal.) As a result, Parker Bowles went on to marry someone else and Prince Charles married Princess Diana.

However by the late ’80 — the pair had struck up an affair that would become a public scandal in the early ’90s. Though Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles finally wed in 2005, the British public still has some lingering prickly feelings about her. Once Prince Charles becomes King — the Duchess of Cornwell’s family is very concerned about the spotlight being put back on her.

What will Duchess Camilla Parker Bowles’ title be once Prince Charles becomes king?

When Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall wed in 2005, they tried to ease public disdain in their wedding announcement by promising that the duchess would never become queen. Their announcement stated, “It is intended that Mrs. Parker Bowles should use the title HRH the Princess Consort when the Prince of Wales accedes to the throne.”

In fact, because they wed in a civil union (because they were both previously divorced), it would be legally impossible for the duchess to become queen. The Mirror columnist Susie Boniface explained, “If your marriage is recognized by the state but not the constitution, you cannot be crowned queen as the wife of the head of state in a constitutionally-recognized coronation in which your husband becomes the head of state.”

Why does Camilla Parker Bowles’ family dread the day Prince Charles become king?

Since the spotlight is on the Cambridges and the Sussexes –it seems like a primetime for Prince Charles to ascend to the throne. However, the Duchess of Cornwall’s family is still concerned about the Brits’ long memory. In her book The Duchess — royal expert Penny Juror spoke with a close family member of the duchess who explained

At least one member of her family doesn’t want her to become Queen for fear of a backlash. Between Diana and the Queen is a hard place to be. People might go a bit wild. The Queen who’s been in our lives forever, the worship of Diana, and suddenly Queen Camilla. It’s going to be such shake-up. I fear for them both.”

Does Duchess Camilla Parker Bowles want to be queen?

Despite the public’s apprehension, it looks like Prince Charles might be advocating for Parker Bowles to receive the title of Queen Consort. After all, Prince Charles’ official website has removed information about his wife’s future title in the frequently asked questions sections. However, according to MP Frank Field, who works with the duchess as patron of his Foundation Years Trust, “Charles will try and press of her to be crowned Queen. And it is right that he should do so.” However, Juror revealed,

Friends and family know it is not something she wants – she has said as much. She is in this position because of her love of the man, not because of her desire to be anything more than a support to him. The whole business of his accession is something she dreads and, in her inimitable way, is choosing not to think about.

We’ll just wait to see how all of this turns out.
