One of the original Avengers, and an all-time audience favorite, Captain America has consistently proven to be one of Marvel’s most bankable characters.
Chris Evans, the actor behind the shield, will be retiring from the role following the release of Avengers: Endgame, but he has certainly made his fortune during his stint with Marvel. Discover how much Evans has made over the years playing Captain America, and what comes next for the handsome actor, following the end of his contract with Marvel.
How much did Evans make in the first Captain America movie?
In 2011, Chris Evans made his first cinematic foray as the iconic superhero. Captain America: The First Avenger featured Evans as Steve Rogers, a frail soldier who is given a special serum that enhances him to the point of superhuman strength. With his newfound abilities, Rogers must stop a villain known as Red Skull from using a mysterious artifact called “The Tesseract” in order to control the world.
Critics and audiences loved Evans in the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America. He played the character with the perfect amount of gravitas and heroism and seemed to seamlessly fit into the 1940’s time period of the film. The film was somewhat of a gamble for Marvel, as Evans had been in films for nearly a decade but had not yet achieved leading man status in Hollywood.
His casting raised more than a few eyebrows. However, their bet paid off big time, and Evans became a superstar. For his work in Captain America: The First Avenger, Evans earned a salary of $300,000.
Did Evans get an increase after the first movie?
Following the overwhelming worldwide success of Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel immediately charted a course for Evans to star in a series of sequels.
In 2014, Evans appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This film, which was a markedly darker, more dramatic film, explored the Captain’s life as one of the Avengers as he grapples with a villain that is much more than what he initially appears. In accordance with his bigger star power, Evans’ salary increased dramatically in this film.
He reportedly earned around $3.2 million for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The 2016 film Captain America: Civil War was an entirely new chapter for Steve Rogers, and although Evans had to share screen time with the rest of the Avengers team, including Robert Downey, Jr. and Tom Holland, he still made quite the impression.
What comes next for Chris Evans?
Currently, Evans is one of the most bankable and popular stars in Hollywood. During the past decade of his association with Marvel, his net worth has risen to around $50 million. From where he started in the first film, making $300,000, Evans is now making several million per film. Reportedly, he has netted $15 million for the last two Avengers films.
Although his appearance in Avengers: Endgame will be his last turn as Captain America, Evans has a very busy schedule lined up following the April release of the film. In November, Evans will be lending his talents to the horror film Knives Out, and will also be starring in the new Apple+ series Defending Jacob, where he will play the father of a teenager accused of murder.
In addition, he is set to star in the highly-anticipated science fiction film Infinite. Even though fans won’t be able to enjoy any new Captain America adventures, they will still be able to see plenty of Evans – and with his talent and versatility, it is very likely that he will be in entertainment for decades to come.
