‘Captain Marvel 2’ Could See The First Glimpse of Marvel’s All-Female Avengers A-Force
As fans prepare to enter Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), everyone is looking forward to seeing Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) back in action in Captain Marvel 2. With characters like Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) expected to make a big impact moving forward, there is a chance that Captain Marvel 2 will feature a first look at members of the studio’s future all-female Avengers squad. Which superheroes will be included in Marvel’s next big ensemble project?
Portman to appear in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’
After starring in the first two Thor movies, Thor and Thor: The Dark World, Portman’s relationship with Marvel soured – and it all started when director Patty Jenkins left the project in the pre-production stage.
Portman was reportedly unhappy with Jenkins’ departure and did not like Jane’s lackluster storyline in The Dark World. This is one reason why Jane did not make an appearance in Thor: Ragnarok and was not expected to return to the MCU.
To be fair, Jane was featured in Avengers: Endgame, but her appearance did not have a big impact on the overall story, and her voice was from previously unused Dark World footage.
But that all changed this summer when Marvel announced that Portman will have a main role in Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) next outing, Thor: Love and Thunder. The movie will explore Jane’s journey as the next superhero to wield Mjolnir.
With Jane appearing as the new Thor, Hemsworth’s character is expected to take on the new name of Odinson, and that might not be the only time we will see Jane in action.
Portman might cameo as Thor in ‘Captain Marvel 2’
Jane’s appearance in Love and Thunder will only be the start of her new journey in the MCU. According to We Got This Covered, Marvel loves the idea of Jane being the new Thor so much that they want Portman to reprise the role in future films.
This reportedly includes an appearance in Captain Marvel 2, though details of her role are still unknown. Production is not even close to starting on the sequel, which does not have a release date yet.
It will likely be a long time before we know any specifics about Jane’s role, though she is expected to help protect Earth from an invasion by the Kree (assuming that is the film’s main storyline).
Teaming up Jane and Captain Marvel is a great idea and also gives us a first look at two superheroes who might comprise an all-female Avengers in the near future.
When will ‘Captain Marvel 2’ hit theaters?
Larson’s first appearance as the eponymous superhero was met with widespread success in the box office. In fact, Captain Marvel was the fourth highest-earning movie of 2019.
Given the project’s success, Marvel is fully expected to move forward with a sequel. The only problem is the studio has yet to reveal anything about Captain Marvel 2, so it is possible that it will not hit theaters until after Phase 4 is over.
Phase 4 is expected to span the next few years, so Captain Marvel 2 might not open in theaters until 2022 at the earliest.
The good news is that we know for sure Marvel is moving forward with the project, and we should learn more as we head into the next phase of the MCU.
How Captain Marvel was almost in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’
Until we learn more, Marvel fans might be surprised to learn that Captain Marvel almost made her debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The character was originally slated to appear during the final battle with Ultron, but her scenes were scrapped in the pre-production phase after Marvel president Kevin Feige convinced director Joss Whedon that the timing was not right.
At the time of the movie, fans had not been introduced to the character, and Feige felt like having her appear in Age of Ultron would have been confusing for most viewers.
So instead, her scenes were given to Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), who went on to play an important part in the MCU.
Marvel has not commented on the reports surrounding Captain Marvel 2.
