‘Captain Marvel 2’ Could Be The Start of ‘Secret Invasion’

It’s no secret that Captain Marvel’s sequel is a highly anticipated MCU movie, most likely happening in Phase 5. Brie Larson’s titular character is the strongest Avenger and most likely going to take a leadership position in the next phase of movies, but her sequel isn’t ready for the world just yet. Even so, there are already rumors about what it could be called, and furthermore, what it could be about.

The rumor regarding the title of ‘Captain Marvel 2’

Although it doesn’t hold a lot of weight, We Got This Covered shared a rumor from one of their favorite leakers that Captain Marvel 2 will be titled Captain Marvel: Secret Invasion. Again, just a rumor, but it’s not a far-fetched one.

What is ‘Secret Invasion’?

The Secret Invasion plotline in the comic books was a massive event for the Avengers where Skrulls had been infiltrating Earth for years. As the first Captain Marvel showed, Skrulls exist in the MCU and have the ability to take the form of anyone, even accessing recent memories and knowledge.

In the comics, the Skrulls were evil and this invasion lead to different Avengers being compromised, many losses, and tragic events followed. Even though there are good Skrulls in the MCU as seen by Talos and his wife Soren, that doesn’t mean evil ones can’t show up eventually.

A ‘Secret Invasion’ plotline makes a lot of sense

Hypothetically speaking, a Secret Invasion storyline would make a lot of sense and fit into the existing world of Captain Marvel. It would also create a lot of negative ripples through the MCU, especially if it follows the same plot where Skrulls impersonate different Avengers.

In addition to it making sense thematically, Marvel’s president Kevin Feige has even spoken on the topic of a Secret Invasion story.  He spoke with Slashfilm and said that just because the audience was introduced to good Skrulls, bad ones exist too. He continued:

“…The Skrulls are as diverse and as [sic] multilayered as any other intelligent life form. Certainly like humanity itself. And we happen to see good ones. I think there are probably better ones out there as well, like there are with any fully realized characters. But yes, the idea is certainly was to subvert the expectation of the pointy-eared green aliens. And Ben Mendelsohn and even subverting people’s assumption that Ben Mendelsohn will be playing the villain.”

ScreenRant also asked about Secret Invasion and if it would be used later on, to which Feige responded with, “Kevin Feige: I mean, anything we haven’t done, anything from the books that we haven’t yet done in film is always on the table.” Basically, don’t rule out evil Skrulls and fake Avengers just yet.

A ‘Captain Marvel’ sequel won’t be coming out soon

With all of this hypothesizing, fans are more than likely itching for official information regarding the sequel. But don’t hold your breath, because even Larson doesn’t know when the next Captain Marvel will happen or shoot. “I don’t really know what job I’m going to do next, which is very exciting,” she told Variety in a recent interview. “And most of this year, you know, I had to do the press tour. But then the last half of the year, I’ve just been focusing way more on just doing what I want to do that’s completely outside of my job.”

While Carol Danvers is getting some much-deserved rest, fans can speculate away at what her next on-screen mission might be.
