Captain Sandy from ‘Below Deck Med’ Dishes About a Job She Would Secretly Love to Try

By now Below Deck Mediterranean fans know one thing: There is nothing that Captain Sandy Yawn can’t do like a boss.

Many of the captain’s talents have quietly emerged through the series and her personal Instagram. She’s a team player and her crew’s biggest fan. Yawn is always cheering on a determined deckhand or giving one of her crew members a second chance to get their job right.

She can also dock a huge superyacht like its nobody’s business too. Plus, she has stories about being chased by pirates while keeping her cool. Even though viewers are seeing more of this superyacht’s captain’s talents, she recently shared a career she would secretly love to try.

She can work in every area of the yacht

Crew members typically don’t see their superyacht captain doing dishes or putting out the giant water slide. But that’s not the way Yawn works. This is a captain who likes to help any way she can.

One reason she is so hands-on is that she has literally worked in every aspect of boating. “I started by washing boats,” she told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in December. “In the day where I started, there weren’t these big superyachts. I did everything. Interior, exterior. I didn’t cook but I cleaned toilets, I cleaned everything.”

Yawn has also worked in the engine room where she changed fuel filters. At that point, she ultimately went to school to be a licensed captain. But she didn’t stop there. She also took engineering and air conditioning classes.

Yawn also gets her hands dirty on charter

Fans recently applauded Yawn’s expertise in the kitchen. When her chef insisted she couldn’t thinly slice meat, Yawn jumped in and showed her how it is done. She disclosed during the Below Deck Med episode she grew up in a family of butchers.

She’s also seen (on a few occasions) helping the deckhands deploy the always awkward and heavy water slide. Her “can do” attitude is infectious as the crew members are eager to please her.

In the past, Yawn was also often seen in the galley kitchen washing and drying dishes too. Perhaps one reason Yawn stays in the mix is that she knows how competitive her industry can be. “You are in competition with every boat on the dock during boat shows too, so you want to have the most fabulous dinners and best parties,” she said.

But she’s also incredibly creative

Yawn has been vocal about her love of music and fitness. She truly embraces Soul Cycle and recently took her partner in life, Leah Shafer to a class.

She is also passionate about music. Shafer is a musician with a rich, soulful voice that brings audiences to their knees. Recently Yawn made an appearance at a Pride event where Shafer was performing. Yawn shared an incredible video of Shafer’s rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.”

The next day, the ladies were on their way to the recording studio where they playfully joked about how Yawn was now Shafer’s assistant. “I’m the driver, the stylist,” Yawn says on her Instagram story. Shafer says, “Everything.” Shafer shares that Yawn round-brushed her hair out the night before. “Because secretly, I’ve always wanted to own a hair salon,” Yawn says smiling. “Not because I wanted to do hair, but because its such a cool vibe when you go into a hair salon.” Even though Yawn may be slightly joking we all know her hair salon would be the best in town.
