Van Houten was born to a writer and theater-radio producer, Theodore van Houten, in the Netherlands. Her younger sister, Jelka, is also an actress. Talent apparently runs in the family, and she was exposed to art at a young age and grew to love it. She studied at the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Kleinkunstacademie Theaterschool in Amsterdam.

Her very first leading role came in the form of the television film, Suzy Q (1999). She won a Golden Calf for best acting in a television drama for that role. Two years later she would win another Golden Calf for best actress for Undercover Kitty (2001).

Van Houten gained widespread recognition for her role in Black Book (2006). It was the most commercially successful Dutch film so far to date. She would go on to win another Golden Calf for best actress for that performance. She was nominated for a Saturn Award for bestsupporting actress for her role in Valkyrie (2008) as well.

Van Houten has a total net worth of $5 million and is clearly a very talented actress. She spoke with the senior editor of Gold Derby, Daniel Montgomery, about her role in Game of Thrones in the final season as the mysterious Melisandre.

“The last scene was burning the trenches and that was with a big green screen so it wasn’t very romantic or anything,” explained Van Houten. “Also, because it was such an intense scene for me as Melisandre to make it happen, to do those praises and to ask the Lord of Light to help me. That’s where I felt like the stakes were so high for the characters and for everyone else. It was a very intense scene to do and it was mixed with my own emotions of it being my last scene and saying goodbye has never been my favorite thing in the world. It was quite a loaded day, you could say. A lot of tension had to come out after I’d done that scene and I just started crying like a baby. I didn’t really see that coming. I just was overwhelmed by emotion. I just couldn’t stop crying.”

Van Houten has been dating fellow actor Guy Pearce since 2015. They are extremely private and prefer to keep it that way. They have a son together named Monte Pearce, who was born in 2016. They keep their son off social media and keep a low profile online. Van Houten has posted a few pictures of their child, but tends to block out his face so you can’t see him fully. Pearce rarely posts pictures of his family either, but the couple appears to have a loving and happy relationship.

Carice van Houten nominated herself for an Emmy Award

Van Houten, along with her fellow co-stars, Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy) and Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), self-submitted themselves for Emmy Awards and received the nominations. Each of the actors did it themselves without the help of HBO.

They all had to pick up the $225 entry fee, which is nothing compared to the thought of winning an Emmy Award. They submitted themselves via their representatives and could come away with an Emmy.

Van Houten is clearly a rare talent that is sure to have a long and prosperous career. But she will always be Melisandre in our hearts.
