Carrie Fisher Said That Harrison Ford Was Her ‘Number One’ Priority While Filming ‘Star Wars’
While filming Star Wars: A New Hope, Carrie Fisher had no idea how much of an impact George Lucas’s film would have on the general public. But during the shooting process, Fisher wasn’t concerned with all the fame and fortune that would come from her iconic movie role.
All she could think about was one thing: Her co-star, Harrison Ford.
For three months during filming, the two had an affair. Fisher said it was “Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend.” And according to the actor in her 2016 memoir, Ford was her “number one” priority during the making of A New Hope.
How did Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford’s affair begin?
“Carrison” began during George Lucas’s 32nd birthday party.
During the event, a group of crew members for the film were trying to get Fisher drunk. Ford thought they might try to take advantage of her, so he stole her away from the crew members and dragged her into his studio car. It was there that they kissed for the first time.
Carrie Fisher said Harrison Ford was her ‘number one’ priority while filming ‘Star Wars’
Fisher never expected to have an affair with Ford because he was fifteen years older than her, and already married.
“One of the things I knew when Harrison and I met was that nothing of a romantic nature would happen,” she wrote in her memoir. “It wasn’t even an issue. There were plenty of guys out there who were single whom I could date without needing to dip into the married guy pool. He was also far too old for me- almost fifteen years older!”
She continued, adding that her co-star was “out of her league” from her perspective.
“He was just so far out of my league,” she said. “Compared to him, I didn’t even have an actual verifiable league. We were destined for different places.”
But low and behold, they continued to have “sleepovers,” as she jokingly called them nearly every weekend while filming.
Fisher would think about Ford all the time behind the scenes. It got to the point where he became her number one priority. Meanwhile, she somberly mentioned, Ford had a lot more to think about than his affair with his co-star.
“I’m sure that on our relative lists of priorities as we went about filming, I might have ranked as high as number fifteen on his agenda, while Harrison was my number one,” she wrote.
Carrie Fisher wanted to get married to Harrison Ford while making ‘Star Wars’
Even though she knew Ford was already married to someone else, Fisher still fantasized about a future with her co-star. She imagined a world where he’d “gently and responsibly” leave his wife for her.
“Harrison could expectedly (but gently and responsibly) leave his wife,” she wrote. “And after a barely noticeable, dignified amount of time, he would marry me (in an unsentimental, tasteful way.) We would subsequently astonish everyone- including ourselves- by remaining together for the rest of whoever died first’s life.”
