Underwood was “frustrated” her body didn’t “bounce back”

Underwood’s experience with her body after her second pregnancy was different from the first baby, something she admitted that she found “frustrating.”

Underwood shared her thoughts on fitness and health at the CALIA by Carrie Underwood winter getaway in Aspen, telling People that there was pressure to “bounce back” after her second child.

She explained, “After having my first kid [Isaiah, 4], I felt like I bounced back fast. And then with Jake [who was born in January 2019], it was like my body took a minute to get back to me.”

The singer added: “It was frustrating, because I’m like, ‘Why wasn’t it like the first time?’”

“But I’m four years older,” she noted, adding, “That also helped me shift my mindset — I’m still working hard, wanting to be the best me possible, but cutting myself slack and just thinking, ‘Be kind to yourself.’ It’s amazing what we [women] do to ourselves. We’re probably all our toughest critics.”

The singer also shared her thoughts on how detrimental the phrase “cheat days” can be. Instead, Underwood has a healthier spin on the idea that allows you to enjoy life.

Underwood explained: “I don’t like to call them ‘cheat days’ — you’re just enjoying life. I feel like holiday time can be stressful when it comes to health and fitness, but it doesn’t have to be. You can just say, ‘I’m going to enjoy myself on the holidays.’ “

She continued: “It’s all about friends and family and food and parties, and indulging responsibly. And when New Year’s is over, get back on the horse. It’s like, ‘Okay, I’ve had my holiday fun. Now it’s time to get back on my path.’”

How Carrie Underwood stays in shape

In an Oct. 2019 interview with Shape magazine, Underwood shared her fitness secrets and a big part of the equation is that the singer keeps things simple.

She explained: “We all have enough to worry about and enough to do in our lives. I believe in keeping things as simple as possible — from workouts to skincare. The fewer things I have to think about and worry about, the better. If it’s too complicated, I’m not going to do it.”

Underwood also shared her advice for moms, noting: “Don’t work out to lose weight. Treat your body right in order to be healthy. When people talk about deprivation diets and all the things they can’t have, that messes with your mind. You don’t want to be like, ‘I can’t do this, I can’t eat that.’ Focusing on all the good, healthy, yummy things you can have and can do, it’s so much healthier than thinking about workouts as a punishment.”
