Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anne Buydens Celebrate Kirk Douglas’ 102nd Birthday

Celebrity birthdays happen every day, and they’re always big events. What doesn’t happen every day, however, is a celebrity’s 102nd birthday. Legendary actor and centenarian, Kirk Douglas, did just that. He celebrated the huge milestone birthday at his home with his loved ones – including his wife, children, and grandchildren.

What is Kirk Douglas known for?

Kirk Douglas was born as Issur Danielovitch on December 9, 1916 to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents. He served in the United States Navy and performed in Broadway before making his movie debut in 1946’s The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. He is best known for the leading role in 1960’s Spartacus. Other popular credits include The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), Lust for Life (1956), and The Final Countdown (1980).

Douglas is famously quoted as saying “I’m too old for change. Like Popeye ‘I yam what I yam.’ Love me or hate me, just don’t be indifferent.” Having reached 102 years of age this month, it’s safe to say that nobody expects the beloved, revered veteran actor to change his ways now.

How did he celebrate his birthday?

To mark the momentous occasion, Kirk Douglas had his home decorated with giant arrangements of flowers spelling out his name. He spent the day with his loving wife, Anne, their children, and their grandchildren. Kirk and Anne posed for photos outside of their home. Kirk wore a dark suit while Anne dressed in a bright pink two-piece. They held hands for the cameras as they sat side-by-side in their wheelchairs.

Anne Buydens & Kirk Douglas: A real Hollywood love story

If Hollywood ever had a real happily-ever-after fairy tale, it would be the story of Douglas and Buydens. The couple have been married for an astonishing 64 years and – according to his birthday images – they are still madly in love at 102 and 99 years of age.

Their fairy tale didn’t begin as such, however. The first time Douglas asked out Buydens, she said no. Which astonished Douglas, because he was at the height of his career and women fawned over his jaw line and astonishingly blue eyes. But Buydens, a publicist, didn’t want the fancy dinners or extravagant dates.

In fact, the two remained in a platonic relationship for an extended period of time. In their book, Douglas said that Buydens didn’t become interested in him until he “stopped talking about myself, and began listening to her.”

The craziest part of their long-lasting marriage was the answer to the big question – what is the secret to your lasting marriage? According to Buydens, it is the fact that Douglas never hid his extramarital affairs from her. She knew that he had relations with women outside of their marriage and chosen to accept it so they could move forward.

Catherine Zeta-Jones’ sweet tribute

Kirk Douglas’ daughter-in-law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, posted a touching tribute to her husband’s father on Instagram for the birthday. A black and white photograph montage played while Zeta-Jones’ daughter (Carys) sang the song, “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera. A video played in the background of Carys playing piano as a little girl. The caption read “Happy 102nd birthday to the most beautiful man. We love you, Kirk.”

It is well known that Catherine Zeta-Jones has always been very close to her father-in-law. They shared a heartfelt moment at an awards ceremony a few years back, and are often photographed together by the paparazzi.

Catherine’s kids take to Instagram

Douglas’ two grandchildren took to Instagram to honor their grandfather. Both posted images of Kirk Douglas when he was a young man.

Carys Douglas captioned her image with, “102 years young. To my inspiration, my pappy. I can’t put into words how much you mean to me. Happy Birthday, I love you.” Dylan Douglas wrote under his own image, “Happy birthday Pappy, 102 years. Though you are adored by millions, my love for you is by far the greatest. Love you forever and always.”
