The year is about to wrap up, and it has been a crazy one. Even some celebrities have had a year full of personal problems and many are getting divorced this year. Some of these divorces were a long time coming with very long battles in court. But then there were divorces that were surprising and swiftly finalized. So which celebrities will be living the single life in 2017? Here are 10 celebrities who got divorced in 2016.
1. Johnny Depp & Amber Heard
The most shocking and nasty divorce of the year was probably the one between these two actors. Heard filed for divorced only 15 months after the two got married citing irreconcilable differences. She eventually claimed that he was abusing her and got a restraining order against him. There was a photo released of her with a bruise on her face that was allegedly caused by Depp and a video showing Depp going off on Heard and throwing a wine bottle and glass.
The divorce was quickly finalized in August. Depp agreed to pay Heard $7 million, and she withdrew her request for a domestic violence restraining order against him. The actors then released a statement together stating that they want to move on, according to CBS News.
Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity. There will be no further public statements about this matter.
2. Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon
After getting married in 2008, they had adorable twins together. Their love didn’t last though and they split up in 2014. The divorce was finalized this year, and both of them began moving on with their lives. Things however, are positive between the two former spouses.
“My ex and I are in a great place and are diligently moving things along so we both can continue to be happy,” Nick Cannon said according to E! “I am happy for her and all her new endeavors, both personal ones and professional ones. I sincerely hope the media doesn’t once again try to manipulate my words … As the world knows, I am an open book and I’m proud of that.”
3. Kaley Cuoco & Ryan Sweeting
The Big Bang Theory star got married in a fire-and-ice-themed wedding only three months after getting engaged. It was definitely a fast romance, but sadly it also led to a fast divorce. The couple finalized their divorce 21 months after tying the knot, according to People Magazine.
“You know, it’s been rough, but things are going good,” she revealed to Ellen. “I’m much, much better now. I’m in a much better place than I was.” She then added, “I had the date tattooed on my back to remind me … don’t tattoo wedding dates.”
4. Amber Rose & Wiz Khalifa
The talk show host and rapper got married in 2013 and have a son together named Sebastian. But sadly their love didn’t last forever and their divorce was finalized this year. They are still good friends and even celebrated together at a strip club, according to TMZ.
5. Sherri Shepherd & Lamar Sally
The actress and television personality was involved in a tough divorce and custody battle with her ex-husband. She once claimed that her husband got a surrogate for their baby in order to defraud her and get child support, according to TMZ. In the end, she has to pay $4,100 a month in child support and $4,600 a month after their child turns 13.
6. Phaedra Parks & Apollo Nida
You might have seen the couple on The Real Housewives of Atlanta. He is now in prison on a eight year sentence for cashing stolen checks and money laundering more than $2 million, according to TMZ. During the ordeal, Parks filed for divorce, which has recently been finalized. In an interview she was asked if she would ever get back with her ex-husband.
“I never say never,” she said on Raq Rants, “but in this case, I don’t think that will be a possibility. At the end of the day, we’re friends and we have our kids together, so we’ll always be friends. We’ll always have a relationship.”
7. Chris Rock & Malaak
The comedian and actor got married to Malaak in 1996 and they later had two kids together. They then separated in 2014 and he opened up about the process with The Guardian. “I’m doing OK,” he said. “You know, some days are better than others, some days you’re sad outta your f*cking mind. But my daughters are good and I’m only an hour away. Two houses close by. It’s good.” Their divorce was finalized in August.
8. Mandy Moore & Ryan Adams
The This Is Us star got married to her husband in 2009 but their relationship ended in divorce this year. She got to keep the Beverly Hills condo and a 2012 Prius, according to TMZ. Adams got his comic book collection, pin ball machines, a ’08 Porsche Carrera, and a ’59 Cadillac. He also has to pay Moore $425,000. The actress opened up about being devastated by the divorce.
“There are moments of being curled up in a ball on the floor,” she said according to People Magazine. “It’s really hard. But I’ve moved on and progressed in the stages of grief and being angry and feeling the loss and all that. I do believe things happen for a reason. And I think I had that mantra moving through the trying times.”
9. Hilary Duff & Mike Comrie
The actress filed for divorce last year after going through a long period of separation with her ex-husband Mike Comrie. It was officially finalized this year. Part of the reason why Duff waited to file was because she was holding on. “I mean, if there wasn’t a chance for getting back [together], I think we would’ve filed for divorce,” she revealed on The Kyle and Jackie O Show. The actress released a positive statement about the relationship.
“They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other’s lives,” it read according to E! “They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time.” Duff has already moved on and is dating personal trainer, Jason Walsh.
10. Richard Gere & Carey Lowell
The actors got married in 2002, but Lowell filed for divorce in 2012. The divorce battle was long and messy, but now it is settled and they’re sharing custody of their son. According to Page Six, they were leading very different lifestyles. Lowell still liked to go out and Gere liked his privacy.
