Jameela Jamil Slammed Piers Morgan For Criticizing Meghan Markle’s Vogue Cover
So, Piers Morgan is not happy with Meghan Markle’s guest-edited September issue of British Vogue. In a July 29 op-ed for The Daily Mail, the controversial news host downright slammed the Duchess of Sussex over the feature. He called her names, like, “B-list actress,” and blasted her decision to feature Jameela Jamil on the cover.
But Jamil didn’t let the remarks slide. She took aim at Morgan on Twitter, and let’s just say things got ugly.
Markle’s British Vogue cover honored leaders and activists
In case you missed it, the September issue of the magazine is called “Forces For Change.” It features 15 influential women who are “raising the bar for equality, kindness, justice, and open-mindedness.” Those people include New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, LGBTQ advocate and actress Laverne Cox, and — of course — Jamil.
For her part, Jamil is an actress who first made waves as a television host and radio DJ. She’s widely known for her body-positive attitude, though.
Nice, right? Well, Morgan doesn’t think so.
Morgan said the cover makes Markle look like a hypocrite
To prove his point, he zeroed in Jamil. He used comments she allegedly made in the past to “illustrate” how she’s a controversial pick for the cover.
“Jameela Jamil, the DJ and actress turned ‘body positive activist’ is a foul-mouthed little charmer. She recently branded me a ‘sh** stain’ and ‘a giant pile of w*nk’ on Twitter after I questioned Sam Smith’s bizarre announcement that he is now identifying as non-binary soon after coming out as gay,” he wrote.
He continued, “Ms. Jamil used to be, by her own admission, a ‘slut-shamey, judgmental’ columnist for Company magazine who repeatedly attacked other women for their behaviour.”
Morgan then called Jamil “the complete antithesis of ‘equality, kindness, and open-mindedness’” and accused her of using the same photo-editing tools she tends to speak out about.
What Jamil had to say about all of this
In response to the news host, Jamil directed him to read her pinned message on Twitter, where she admits her faults in the past.
“It is never too late to check yourself and right your wrongs. I used to be slut shamey, judgmental, and my feminism wasn’t intersectional enough. Nobody is born perfectly ‘woke.’ Listen, read, learn, grow, change and make room for everyone. We aren’t free til ALL of us are free,” the tweet reads.
She then called him out over his remarks. “My PINNED tweet is all of the mistakes I made, owning up to being problematic when I was young. I have nothing to hide,” she began. “You are old, and still a problematic slut-shaming, fat-shaming, misogynist, irrelevant sh** stain, smeared across our country,” she continued.
But the drama didn’t stop there. Morgan retweeted Jamil’s message, writing, “One of Meghan’s 15 ‘inspiring, kind, inclusive’ heroines…” which shows that he isn’t budging from his comments.
As of writing, Markle has not yet addressed the matter. But, considering how heated all of this is, we can’t say we blame the duchess from keeping her distance.
