In ‘Magnolia Journal,’ Joanna Gaines Talks About How Tricky It Can Be to Live Simply
Living the simple life sounds great, but it can be hard to achieve balance. In “Magnolia Journal“, Gaines shares how she approaches living simply. She also admits it can be difficult to introduce simplicity. Here’s what Gaines shared in “Magnolia Journal” about her journey toward a simple life.
Joanna Gaines says she feels better when her house is clean
In her “Magnolia Journal” column, Gaines says she likes to make sure her home is orderly. She says having a clean space helps her feel calm, think clearly, and feel better. “I like to keep a clean house. When my house is orderly, I feel better and I think better. I even breathe more easily in a clean space—it somehow calms me. If you were to drop by my house unannounced, most of the time the place would look pretty good,” says Gaines.
The former ‘Fixer Upper’ star isn’t always neat
Although you might think Gaines always has a neat home, this isn’t the case. She admits she has a bit of a secret when it comes to organization. “Sometimes when I got to my living room hutch to replace a burned-down candle or find some matches, I can’t actually open the drawers. The drawers are so jam-packed with my assorted ‘necessities’ that I can’t get to any of them. If this isn’t ironic, I’m not sure what is,” she jokes.
Living a simple life isn’t so simple for Joanna Gaines
In her column, Gaines tells her readers life isn’t always so simple. In fact, she says she has to be “aggressive” about pursuing a simple life. “Isn’t living with simplicity supposed to be simple? Hardly. Few things in my life require more intentionality than living an edited life. Whether it’s our hectic schedule or overflowing drawers or the unchecked thoughts that can run through my mind, I need to be aggressive in my pursuit of simplicity if there is any hope of it being a reality for our family,” Gaines said.
Taking time to reflect can help you lead a simpler life
If you’re looking for ways to simplify your life, take time to reflect on the areas of your life that need to be adjusted. Gaines says the way you choose to streamline your life is personal, so taking time out to think about what you need is necessary in order to achieve your goal. “Living simply is a personal thing. There is no one-size-fits-all formula that’s going to solve all your problems. Still it takes only a couple of minutes of looking inward to have a pretty good sense of what areas in our life could use a little pruning.”
