When you’re a member of the British royal family, security is of the utmost importance. Code names are used not only for protection but also to help royal family members travel with ease when staying at hotels or attending major functions. Their bodyguards use the code names when referring to them to make sure the family is shielded from anyone who might want to cause harm. The code names are also used by staff when arranging for special bookings, reports Radar. This reduces the likelihood contact information will get into the wrong hands or be used for a possible terrorist attack.

Kate Middleton and Prince William aren’t the only royals who have secret code names. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are known by their security as “David Stevens” and “Davina Scott.” A source told Daily Star that if someone happened to get a phone that belonged to a security member or royal aide, they would not see the duke or duchess’ name in the contact list. “It is far too risky in the wrong hands,” the source told the publication. “They get given code names, but they are changed regularly for obvious reasons.”

How royal code names work

How do royal code names work? The code names are selected based on a royal family member’s title. The titles of Prince William and Kate Middleton are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, so the initials “DC” are used. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, so the initials “DS” are used. The security team uses common names with the same initials to form the royal code names.
