Chadwick Boseman’s death in 2020 rocked Hollywood

Boseman’s untimely death in 2020 caught countless people by surprise, as the Da 5 Bloods actor kept his battle with cancer completely private and out of the public eye. After successfully bringing historical figures such as James Brown, Thurgood Marshall, and Jackie Robinson to life on screen, Boseman’s star was rising even further after his acclaimed portrayal of King T’Challa in the Marvel blockbuster Black Panther.

Boseman’s family received an outpouring of support from all over the entertainment industry and beyond, and many shared their personal stories that spoke to Boseman’s character. Chadwick Boseman was nominated for an Academy Award for ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’

Boseman’s most awarded role of his career ended up being his swan song. He played the zealous trumpet player Levee in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, often clashing with Davis’ larger-than-life portrayal of blues icon Ma Rainey.

Boseman’s role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom earned him his first and only Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, where he shared the category with Riz Ahmed in Sound of Metal, Gary Oldman in Mank, Steven Yeun in Minari, and Anthony Hopkins in The Father.

Ultimately, in an unexpected twist at the end of the Oscars ceremony, Hopkins ended up taking home the golden statuette for his role in The Father. Hopkins paid tribute to the late Black Panther actor in his acceptance speech the following day.

Derrick went on to wish Hopkins and his family all the best, saying “I”m sure [Hopkins] would if Chad won.”
