Did Chadwick Boseman Set a Record for Posthumous Award Nominations in 2021?
Actor Chadwick Boseman joins the ranks of stars like Heath Ledger and James Dean to receive award nominations after his death. The Black Panther star had not one but two films released in 2020, the same year he died of cancer. How do his posthumous award nominations stack up?
Chadwick Boseman died in 2020
Boseman’s family announced his death on August 28, 2020, via his official social media channels. “It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman,” they wrote. “Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV.”
Boseman’s death came as a shock to his fans and coworkers. From Marvel President Kevin Feige through Avengers: Endgame co-stars like Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr., everyone expressed their sadness of the King T’Challa portrayers death. His Black Panther family, like Lupita Nyong’o, released lengthy statements.
His movie ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ earned him award nominations
“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” the statement continued. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy.”
Based on the August Wilson play, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom premiered on Netflix in December 2020. For the film, Boseman earned several posthumous award nominations. These including Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama at the Golden Globes and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role from the Screen Actors Guild.
The last film released in his lifetime was ‘Da 5 Bloods’
Undoubtedly, 2020 was a strange year for Hollywood. But Boseman’s multiple Netflix releases served him well. The final project released while he was still alive was another streaming service offering. The Spike Lee-directed war drama Da 5 Bloods debuted in June 2020 to great acclaim.
Like Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Da 5 Bloods garnered award nominations. The former was relatively expected. But some were surprised to see the latter on the list when the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were announced. Boseman is up for the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role award.
Is Chadwick Boseman eligible for an Oscar in 2021?
Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, award show announcements have been all over the place in 2021. The Golden Globes and SAG Awards are typically in January. And the results are used to predict the outcome of the Academy Awards, which is usually a few weeks later.
This year, the Oscars are pushed back to late April in hopes of being able to have an in-person ceremony. Given his record-breaking four SAG Award nominations (two individual and two he shares with the casts) and his Golden Globe nomination, Boseman is a shoo-in for a posthumous Oscar nod. Whether or not he wins is to be determined.
