Channing Tatum’s ‘Magic Mike XXL’ Holds Nothing Back
After months of unofficial teasers, the first trailer for Magic Mike XXL has just dropped, and it’s giving the audience exactly what it wants. Packed with bare abs, party scenes, and plenty of choreographed routines, the just-released footage from the upcoming sequel unabashedly delivers everything that fans of the original have been hoping to see more of, and then some.
Channing Tatum reprises his character of Magic Mike in the followup film, which he also wrote and is producing. Per the synopsis, the movie will pick up three years after the 2012 original, in which Mike decided to leave the stripper life while still at the top of this game to become a custom-furniture designer. This time, the remaining Kings of Tampa are also ready to throw in the towel — but not, of course, before going out with a bang.
The flick will follow Mike and the rest of the men as they road trip to Myrtle Beach for one last blowout performance, making pit stops to reunite with old acquaintances along the way. The journey ends up helping Mike and the rest of the crew to “learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways.”
In addition to Tatum, other previously announced returning cast members include Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez, and Gabriel Igleisas. Though former cast members Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer will reportedly not be returning, the sequel will feature plenty of new additions, particularly to the female cast. Amber Heard, Andie McDowell, and Jada Pinkett-Smith will all be appearing in the movie this time around, as will Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover, and football star-turned-talk show host Michael Strahan.
Some of these new faces, including Heard, pop up in the trailer, which starts off with Tatum’s Mike working quietly as in his new studio. But when Ginuwine’s R&B classic “Pony” comes on the radio, it’s not long before Mike is busting out his old moves. Before you know it, he’s reunited with his former fellow strippers on the stage — or as the clip puts it, “back to the grind.”
Like the promotional poster that was released a day before it, the trailer has about as much subtlety as a Times Square billboard, but it’s fun and clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is about all viewers can ask for from a Magic Mike sequel. Plus, to the credit of Tatum and the rest of the people behind the movie, they obviously know exactly how to amp up anticipation for a film. The teaser plays right into moviegoers’ hands, even flashing the words “You’re welcome” at the very end.
With the trailer already causing a huge social media frenzy, it seems Magic Mike XXL is about to become just as big of a hit as its predecessor. The original Magic Mike, directed by Steven Soderbergh, raked in $167 million worldwide against a budget of only $7 million. Soderbergh handed over his directorial duties to Gregory Jacobs this time around, but the change doesn’t seem to had much effect on the project. If the trailer is any indication, fans should expect Magic Mike XXL to be just as over the top and in your face as the first.
Magic Mike XXL is scheduled to hit theaters on July 3.
