On April 2, 2019, the internet rejoiced: Tickets for Avengers: Endgame have gone on sale. The film, which is set to break box-office records (including those held by previous Marvel Cinematic Universe entries), has drawn a lot of attention, especially with its highly viewed trailers. The announcement that tickets were available for purchase came with another short “Special Look” at the movie, which featured heart-wrenching character reunions.
Everyone lost someone important to them in the Decimation
When Thanos snapped and made half of all living creatures disappear in Avengers: Infinity War, all of the characters lost at least one of their closest friends. Steve Rogers (Captain America) lost Bucky Barnes, who has been his driving force through more than one of the previous Marvel flicks. Scott Lang (Ant-Man) lost both his significant other (Hope Van Dyne, aka the Wasp) and her parents. Okoye and M’Baku lost their nation’s King (T’Challa, Black Panther) and Princess Shuri (allegedly). And Tony suffered a tragic loss when his protege, Peter Parker (Spider-Man) evaporated after the snap.
That’s not even all of those lost in the Decimation, some of which we didn’t see on screen. Additionally, all of the characters were scattered during battle, so not everybody knows who they’ve lost right away. This is why these reunions that take place in Endgame are so meaningful.
Tony and Pepper Potts
In the very first Endgameteaser trailer, Tony is in space, preparing for his death. He’s recording a message for his fiance, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow’s character). There’s no guarantee at this point that he’ll ever make it back to Earth — but fortunately, as we’ve seen in subsequent trailers, he does, in fact, return home.
Tony and Pepper share a deep hug in the new trailer. She probably got in contact with the Avengers after the Decimation, but it may have been a while before she knew that Tony had survived it. Obviously, this reunion was a powerful one, given how things were when they last saw each other at the beginning of Infinity War.
Nebula and Rocket
The Guardians first met the Avengers in Infinity War, as Earth’s mightiest heroes and the galaxy protectors joined to fight Thanos. Though everyone suffered significant losses, the ratio of those left standing to those dusted was the worst for the Guardians, with only two remaining: Nebula and Rocket Raccoon.
At the time of Thanos’ snap, Rocket was in Wakanda with many of the Avengers, while Nebula was on Titan with Tony, Peter, Doctor Strange, and the rest of the Guardians. The two characters share a moment in which they hold hands, perhaps as Nebula is telling Rocket that Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, and Mantis are all gone. These two have as much if not more to gain from reversing the Decimation, and given their knowledge of the vast universe, will likely play a big part in the action of Endgame.
Tony and Steve
This is, for many fans, the biggest reunion of all. If you’re all caught up with your MCU films, you know that Tony and Steve, who are generally considered the leaders of the Avengers, had a falling out in Captain America: Civil War. They fought against one another, and a greater rift was formed when Tony learns that Bucky killed his parents many years before. In Infinity War, both mention how they haven’t spoken, though Tony does have the old cell phone that Steve gave him, which he looks fondly at.
In Endgame, it looks like they’ll finally put their differences aside to take down Thanos. As this may well be the last Marvel movie for both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, it would have been devastating if their characters had left (or been killed) without patching things up. In the trailer, we see them shake hands as Tony asks, “You trust me?” and Steve replies, “I do.” It’s a heartwarming moment that sets the tone for what is sure to be an epic battle.
