Michaela Coel is a talented writer and actress who became known for her show, Chewing Gum. The show followed the life of a young woman named Tracey, who is determined to branch out from her sheltered upbringing (including some hilarious physical comedy exploring sexuality). Coel won two BAFTAs for the part, so it was pretty shocking when the news came out that the show will be going on a hiatus after its second season.
Many fans will have to wait to see what’s next for Tracey and her friends and family. But they don’t have to wait to see Coel perform and bring the sense of humor that led to her big break. She has many projects coming up, including Black Mirror.
The actress will be one of many cast members to star in its upcoming episode, “USS Callister.” Its theme is closely related to Star Trek and includes other stars like Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, and Jimmi Simpson. The cast promoted the episode at PaleyFest on Oct. 6, 2017.
The Cheat Sheet caught up with Coel to talk about her new role in the anthology series, which she has appeared in before. We also talked to her about Chewing Gum and her possible plans of returning to the comedy in the future. Here are seven things we learned.
1. Michaela Coel was offered her new role for Black Mirror
Q: Did you audition for this or was it offered?
Michaela Coel: It was an offer. I did do an audition for the last one before and this one, they just messaged, so that was very nice, yeah.
2. Sadly, Coel isn’t giving up details about her character
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about your Black Mirror character this time around?
Coel: Unfortunately not. I can only say she is in Black Mirror.
3. A spaceship was built for the episode she appears in
Q: It seems like the episode is Star Trek-themed…
Coel: Yeahhhhhh it’s very cool. It’s really exciting. Okay, like, it’s really exciting. Like if you’re into like — I mean I got to be on a spaceship. That’s like…and the outfits! It’s really cool. I feel very lucky.
4. She is all about possibly writing an episode for the series
Q: Of course, you’re also a writer, known for Chewing Gum. Do you think you’ll ever write a Black Mirror episode?
Coel: You know, I actually did consider — there was a play I actually really liked and I wanted the rights to the play to do an episode with Charlie [Brooker]. But good for the woman, she’s already got permission to the series, and you never know. I love Charlie Brooker. I love Black Mirror productions, and I love sci-fi and science.
5. Chewing Gum won’t come back until at least 2019
Q: If you ever do return to Chewing Gum, which I know you left it kinda open, do you think that you’ll jump to whatever the time is?
Coel: I’m gonna have to because I don’t have my hair no more. So I mean, you guys know, a place to where like make the hair convincing. It would be a jump. It would definitely be a jump because the next two years are full, so it wouldn’t be until 2019 and I will look different.
6. Black Mirror changed the way she looked at technology
Q: Black Mirror always talks about technology and whatnot. After this episode or maybe after watching any of the episodes of Black Mirror, how do you look at technology differently?
Michaela Coel: Yeah, so “Shut Up and Dance” — that was the episode that I watched that I was like, ‘Okay I’m going to put this sticker on my camera screen and I’m never going to take it off ever again.’
7. Coel isn’t writing the third season of Chewing Gum — for now
The news that the comedy show isn’t coming back anytime soon was confirmed by a representative for Coel through Fader.
“Michaela is not currently writing a third series of Chewing Gum as she is focusing on some other projects,” the rep said. “But [she] is not closing the door to the possibility in the future.”
