‘Chicago Fire’: Will Monica Raymund Ever Return as Gabriela Dawson on the Show?
Chicago Fire had a huge shake-up with Monica Raymund leaving the show. She has since directed an episode of Law & Order SVU so she might do more directing. But will she ever return to the show for good? Here is everything you need to know.
Monica Raymund doesn’t know if she’ll ever return to Chicago Fire
Gabriela Dawson left for a permanent position in Puerto Rico so it’s very possible that Monica Raymund can come back to reprise her role in Chicago Fire. In fact, she did in Season 7 by video chatting with Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer.) But will she ever be back for good?
“Honestly, I don’t know!” answered Monica Raymund to TV Guide. “If I just can’t bear it and must go back to the show, I know the door remains open and I’m grateful for that. But girl, I’m trying to figure out what I’m gonna do tomorrow so I have no idea whether or not I’m going to return to the show. That is up for debate but I am very humbled that the door remains open.”
It’s good to know that Raymund left on good terms that she can appear on Chicago Fire in the future. But why did the actress leave the show in the first place?
Raymund left the show because she wanted a new role
Starring on a successful show can be a blessing and a curse. The cursed part is that things might feel stale at one point and that seemed to be the case for Monica Raymund.
“I’m not sure the exact moment when it happened,” she explained to The Chicago Tribune “but I knew that my six-year contract was coming to an end and I felt like I was hungry to explore a different role, a different story. I wanted to explore a different world. I had been in Chicago for five years and just personally where I was in my life, I was ready to create my home and kind of plant some roots in Los Angeles.”
She revealed that she actually made the switch from a paramedic on Chicago P.D. to a firefighter on Chicago Fire because of this problem. “I’ve gotta say, Wolf Films, the producers were really accommodating to me,” she added. “I had the idea to see if we could flirt with Gabby Dawson going on the firetruck and they wrote me on the firetruck for two years! I did not know that they were going to take that bait and they did!”
Gabriela Dawson being in Puerto Rico wasn’t supposed to be the end for her
Many fans probably assume that the show wrote Monica Raymund out of the show by having Gabriela Dawson go to Puerto Rico. But that was oddly a coincidence according to Chicago Fire executive producer, Derek Haas.
“I screwed that one up and I fully admit it,” he told One Chicago Day. “Monica told me in plenty of time that she was going to be leaving after Season 6. In my head, I thought she was just negotiating.”
It would be interesting if the writers got to show what they really would do to send Gabriela off again. But we might not see that any time soon.
