Are Chip and Joanna Gaines Launching Their Own Streaming Service?

Chip and Joanna Gaines might have closed the door on their HGTV series, Fixer Upper, but they haven’t said goodbye to television. The home renovation gurus have big plans to bring their projects and other Magnolia-approved programs to living rooms everywhere via their own network partnership with Discovery. That said, the husband and wife duo might also have their sights set on something a little more millennial: a streaming platform.

Right now, you can catch rerun episodes of Fixer Upper on HGTV or stream episodes on the network’s website. However, they soon might be available on Chip and Joanna Gaines’s streaming service. According to Deadline, the former Fixer Upper stars will spearhead a direct to consumer streaming service with Discovery, which also runs HGTV since acquiring Scripps Networks Interactive in 2018.

Chip and Joanna Gaines have “built an ecosystem,” with their brand, Magnolia, explained Discovery’s CEO, David Zaslav. And, as it turns out, their hard work aligns perfectly with Discovery’s push to streaming. “We have a real vision for that [Chip and Joanna Gaines’s partnership] in terms of going direct to consumer,” said Zaslav. “We’re reconnecting with them and we’re excited about what we can do together,” he added. According to Deadline, the plan is to take add Chip and Joanna Gaines to an existing network that is doing okay, rebrand it, and take it to the next level with the former Fixer Upper stars.

It’s not the first time Discovery has done this for television moguls like the Gaineses. In 2011, the network replaced its network, Discovery Health with Oprah Winfrey’s OWN.

When will Chip and Joanna Gaines return to TV?

Per usual, Chip and Joanna Gaines are busy off-air with their widely popular Magnolia Market, Magnolia Table, and Waco home renovations, as well as all of their brand partnerships with Target, Living Spaces, and Anthropologie (to name a few). They have also authored a few books, run a magazine, and are busy raising their five children. But, despite all of their projects, the HGTV’s most beloved couple will return to television hopefully sooner than later.

“We signed a non-disclosure and it said, quote unquote, you can tell your mother, but that’s it,” Chip joked before announcing their big news to Jimmy Fallon last fall. “So mom, I just wanted to make a quick announcement, we are coming back to television. You are going to get to see the kids grow up, you are going to see us, well maybe a six-month delay like the rest of the world, but we are excited to be back,” he added.

So, when exactly will they be back? “We’re excited to share that we are currently in the early stages of talking with Discovery about a lifestyle-focused media network for Magnolia,” Magnolia spokesman John Marsicano told People in November 2018. “The details surrounding this opportunity remain a work in progress, but together, our hope is to build a different kind of platform for unique, inspiring and family-friendly content,” he added. Given Deadline’s recent report, it appears that Chip and Joanna Gaines are still finalizing details with Discovery, which means it could be a little while longer with production time and that “six-month delay” Chip spoke about during his announcement.
