Chris Cornell’s Daughter Shares First Single With this Heartbreaking Twist

Toni Cornell, the daughter of late Soundgarden frontman, Chris Cornell, is following in her father’s footsteps. Earlier this week, the 15-year-old singer released an original song, “Far Away Places.” Here’s why the performance is bittersweet.

“Far Away Places” has a surprising connection to Toni’s late father

Toni wrote “Far Away Places” at just 12 years old. The song was recorded on February 2017, in Chris’s home studio in Miami, Florida. Chris produced the song three months before his passing. It’s said to be one of the last projects he worked on before his death.

The two previously worked on music together and could be seen in the recording studio or on stages together throughout the years. In 2015, they performed “Redemption Song” at the Beacon Theater in New York City to a full crowd.

A couple years later — after Chris passed —Toni appeared on Good Morning America where she sang Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” alongside OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder in an emotional, gut-wrenching rendition.

She wanted to honor her late father and his close friend, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park (who had also just passed at the time).

“It’s an honor to perform this for my dad and Chester and to sing for them,” Toni said, according to ABC News.

Is “Far Away Places” Toni’s first song?

It’s no surprise that “Far Away Places” isn’t Toni’s first song ever recorded. Music runs in her veins. On Father’s Day, 2018, Toni released the recording on YouTube of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which she and Chris also performed together.

“Daddy, I love you and miss you so much,” she wrote with the video. “You were the best father anyone could ask for. Our relationship was so special, and you were always there for me. You gave me courage when I didn’t have any. You believed in me when I didn’t. I miss your love every day.”

She added, “Recording this song with you was a special and amazing experience I wish I could repeat 100 times over and I know you would too. Happy Father’s Day daddy, nothing compares to you. – Toni.”

What is “Far Away Places” about?

Toni wrote “Far Away Places” as the lead track for a short film of the same name. The film, written by Toni’s 17-year-old friend, Tatiana Shanks, premiered at a variety of international film festivals in 2018 and is still actively touring the festival circuit.

Far Away Places (the film) is about a boy from the streets of L.A. who visits relatives in Tahiti only to discover his cousin is being abused. The raw lyrics of Toni’s song, with the added layer of Chris’s ear, make the single that much more haunting.

Proceeds from “Far Away Places” will go to the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. We have no doubt that Chris would be so very proud of Toni carrying on his legacy — on her own time, in her own way.
