Chris Evans and Cast of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Debate Captain America’s Beard

When the cast of Avengers: Endgame assembled for a press conference yesterday, it was likely that fans weren’t going to get too many details about the movie, but something very important came out of the event. One burning question was debated: who among them prefers Captain America with a beard and who likes him clean-shaven?

The cast was divided on the issue

Since no one was going to spill the beans on any Avengers: Endgame plot points, it seemed nonspoilery stuff was safe to talk about, so someone asked for a show of hands to see who among the Avengers cast likes Captain America with a beard.

How did they vote? It appears that Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner didn’t join in, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige voted for both. Brie Larson enjoys her Cap with facial hair, as do Chris Hemsworth, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, and the Russo brothers.

Those who voted no beard were Danai Gurira, Karen Gillan, and Paul Rudd.

Robert Downey Jr. had a different take on the matter, noting: “I’m going for neither. I like Chris Evans with a beard with prosthesis over it, when Joss Whedon asked him to come be the tag for the first Avengers.” Evans was filming Snowpiercer at the time and couldn’t shave.

As for Chris Evans, he’s pro-beard.

Why Evans prefers Cap with a beard

In 2018, Evans told USA Today that he was a fan of Captain America with a beard, explaining: “He’s such a monastic character and he has such a quotidian approach to his existence. I imagine when he wakes up in the morning, there is a routine. Part of that is in his nature, part of that is just to keep his sanity, and that all kind of goes out the window a little bit after (2016’s Captain America: Civil War). You see a guy who doesn’t stop caring but just puts down some of that obligation.”

He continued: “I don’t think it’s in his nature to be too much of a loose cannon, but there’s a lack of formality. He’s checked all that at the door and he’s gone inside himself for a little while, and as a result, he’s a little irreverent and maybe even a little dangerous.”

Did Chris Evans almost reveal Avengers: Endgame spoilers?

While those in attendance at the press event weren’t able to share much detail about the movie, Evans almost spilled some spoilers. He was cut off mid-sentence, however, when it sounded like he might drop a hint, keeping the Avengers: Endgame movie secrets secure.

Evans began to answer a question about Captain America, noting, “I can give broad strokes. The completion of the arc, that’s safe to say, right? This movie does provide an ending to a lot of…”

He was then given a cautionary buzzer noise by director Joe Russo, shutting down Evan’s train of thought, before he continued with a super vague conclusion. Evans shared: “He’s been through so much. There’s been so many wonderful elements of working on this movie. The friendships and connections I’ve made over 10 years now, it feels like a family.”

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters April 26.
