Chris Evans Is ‘Aways Looking for a Way Out’ of Acting, But Would Be Open to Returning as Captain America

Never say never. After what appeared to be his final outing as Captain America in Avengers: Endgame, Chris Evans just revealed that he is open to reprising the character in a future Marvel film. The studio has not announced any plans for Cap’s future, but what are the chances that they revive his storyline and bring Evans back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Evans talks about quitting acting for good

After appearing in three solo Captain America movies and four Avengers titles, Evans has become one of the faces of the MCU. But with his character’s journey coming to a fitting conclusion in Endgame, Evans’ time with the studio appears to be at an end.

For Evans, handing over Cap’s shield is not as bad as it sounds. According to CNN, Evans recently sat down with his fellow MCU co-star, Scarlett Johansson, and admitted that he often thinks about leaving the acting business and retiring.

“Every couple of months, I decide I’m done acting,” Chris Evans shared. “This has been my thing for decades now. I’m always looking for a way out, but I do love it.”

Evans went on to talk about how television is witnessing a boom in popularity. Although Evans enjoys doing movies, he believes there is much more freedom in TV, and that extra flexibility is why so many people are turning to television for their entertainment needs.

“I think TV right now, those creative minds are given a bit more freedom,” he stated. “I think that’s why people may be turning away, and looking to things like streaming service shows that actually are innovative.”

Is Chris Evans open to coming back as Captain America?

Playing one of the lead characters in the MCU is a challenging and involved process. As Evans closes in on 40 years of age, the long hours of filming plus keeping himself in superhero shape started to take a toll on his body.

While he is open to reprising the role of Captain America, Evans confessed that he is not looking forward to the idea.

“To Marvel? Wow. Everything clicks when I get up. Recovery is not the same. You never say never. I love the character. I don’t know,” Chris Evans explained. “It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either.”

Evans then noted that he is working on other projects and that he would only return to the MCU if the timing was right. He also wants there to be a good reason for bringing Cap back, beyond selling tickets at the box office.

Given how the character has traditionally been viewed as one of the more boring Avengers, making his return interesting could be challenging for Marvel – especially considering where his story ended.

What might Captain America’s return look like?

In the final scenes of Avengers: Endgame, Cap traveled back in time to restore the Infinity Stones to their original timelines.

But instead of returning to the present day, Cap decided to remain in the past and reconnect with the love of his life. The move was a fitting end for Cap, who sacrificed so much to protect the Earth.

With that in mind, Chris Evans is wary about messing with Cap’s storyline by bringing him back, a move that would likely erase his happy ending.

Unfortunately, Marvel has not said anything about bringing Cap back in a future movie, so this is all speculation at this point. But fans are still hopeful that they have not seen the last of Evans.

Marvel gears up for Phase 4 of the MCU

Earlier this year, Marvel announced its plans for Phase 4 of the MCU and revealed all of its titles for the next two years. Another Captain America movie was obviously not included in the announcement, so if Chris Evans does reprise the role, it would likely be after 2021.

The next movie in the MCU is Black Widow, which is set to premiere on May 1, followed by The Eternals, which is due out next November.

The studio is also planning on launching several new television shows as part of Phase 4, including WandaVision, Hawkeye, Loki, and Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Marvel also confirmed a Doctor Strange sequel titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, along with a new franchise in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Now that he is done with Marvel, Evans is set to star in a new show with Apple titled Defending Jacob. The show is a major departure from Captain America and is a crime drama about a father who is confronted with the allegations that his son is a murderer.

Marvel, meanwhile, has not commented on bringing Chris Evans to play Captain America.
