If you’ve been having trouble keeping track of all of the Infinity Stones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Hemsworth feels the same way.
In a recent interview with Collider, Hemsworth said that the upcoming film Thor: Ragnarok is not bogged down by development with the Infinity Stones, something the actor revealed he barely even fully gets.
“We didn’t want to get bogged down in Infinity Stones and da-da-da-da because I don’t even understand that stuff a lot of the time,” Hemsworth said.
If any one of the Marvel actors were to have a firm grasp on the Infinity Stones, one would think it would be Chris Hemsworth, as his character left at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron in order to learn more about the stones; this is why Thor was not in Captain America: Civil War. This quote from Hemsworth is actually fairly revealing because unless he is completely lying, it suggests that Thor may not have not learned as much as he expected to since Ultron and that another Infinity Stone is not revealed in Thor: Ragnarok. That would mean that the final stone will likely be introduced in Black Panther.
During the interview with Collider, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi stressed that the film is standalone and could be viewed on its own without any of the other Marvel movies and even without the first two Thor movies. At the same time, that’s not to say that Ragnarok does not connect to Avengers: Infinity War.
“Without giving anything away though, [Thor: Ragnarok] definitely bleeds nicely into [Avengers: Infinity War],” Hemsworth told Collider.
That may be an understatement, as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has previously stated that “things change drastically” in Ragnarok and that this change builds directly into the events of Avengers: Infinity War. However, based on Hemsworth’s comments, that change is likely not the introduction of the final Infinity Stone.
In case you too have had trouble keeping track of the Infinity Stones, these are six ingots that when combined with the Infinity Gauntlet gives a person extraordinary powers. Thanos, the big bad of the Marvel universe and villain of Avengers: Infinity War, is in possession of the Infinity Gauntlet, and so he just needs to track down the six stones in order to be unstoppable.
Five of the Infinity Stones have been introduced on screen so far in various Marvel movies: the Space Stone, which is in the Tesseract; the Reality Stone, which is in the Collector’s possession; the Power Stone, which the Guardians of the Galaxy gave to the Nova Corps on Xandar; the Mind Stone, which is in Vision’s forehead; and the Time Stone, which is at Kamar-Taj, the training grounds in Doctor Strange. The sixth and final stone in the comics is the Soul Stone, and the location of this one is not known. It sounds like we won’t see it in Thor: Ragnarok, and so it’s likely that the stone will show up in 2018’s Black Panther, though it’s technically possible Marvel won’t introduce it until Avengers: Infinity War.
Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3.
