Chris Pratt’s Next Space Movie Won’t Involve Superheroes
Chris Pratt may soon be taking on another space-set project — but this time, no superheroes are involved. The Guardians of the Galaxy star is reportedly in talks for the lead role in Sony’s upcoming sci-fi flick, Passengers.
According to Deadline, the studio has been courting Pratt for the part for weeks and now, they are in the midst of negotiating a deal. Written by Jon Spaihts (Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange, Prometheus), the movie is described as a “big sci-fi love story” that takes place on a spacecraft, transporting thousands of people to a distant colony planet. After a malfunction in one of the craft’s sleep chambers, a single passenger is awakened 90 years before everyone else. Faced with the idea of growing old and dying alone, he eventually decides to wake up a second passenger. That sets off the beginning of what soon becomes a unique love story. Morten Tyldum, who recently earned an Oscar nom for helming the Best Picture contender, The Imitation Game, is set to direct the project.
Pratt isn’t the only big star rumored to be in contention for a role in the film. Though the project has yet to secure a female lead to play Pratt’s love interest, Sony is reportedly eyeing fellow A-list star and critical darling Jennifer Lawrence to take on the part. As of now though, it seems her participation isn’t quite a done deal. Per Variety, the in-demand actress is reportedly still early on in conversations to star in the space saga.
Passengers has been in development for quite some time, with several studios and big names attached along the way. The Weinstein Co. acquired the rights to the project early on before eventually letting it go. Earlier last year, Keanu Reeves and Rachel McAdams were also attached to lead the film in a version directed by Brian Kirk (Game Of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire). Reese Witherspoon was once previously tied to the project as well.
The film landed at Sony in late 2014, right as it was embroiled in its hacking controversy. With the movie drawing interest from top talent, the studio is reportedly making it a priority. Should Pratt and Lawrence officially sign on, they’d certainly add star power to the high-profile project.
For Pratt, this is only the latest offer on the table since his career-making turn in Guardians. The actor seems to be one of Hollywood’s favorite new leading men. In addition to reprising his roles in the coming Guardians and The LEGO Movie sequels, Pratt is leading this summer’s Jurassic World. He is also set to take on the title role in the big screen adaptation of the Image Comics series Cowboy Ninja Viking. Most recently, he was rumored to be in contention to play Indiana Jones in an upcoming reboot of the long-beloved franchise.
As for Lawrence, she’s scheduled to appear in the last of the Hunger Games installments, Mockingjay — Part 2, later this year, as well as in X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016. She’s also starring in the Joy Mangano biopic, which is expected to hit theaters this December.
