Chrissy Metz Just Stunned Fans with Her Performance at the ACM Awards. Will She Release an Album?
This Is Us fans know Chrissy Metz as Kate Pearson on the hit NBC drama. On that show, her character is an aspiring singer. And apparently, Metz herself also has some musical dreams. The actress wowed the audience at the 2019 Academy of Country Music Awards on April 7 when she took to the stage to perform “I’m Standing With You” with Carrie Underwood, Maddie & Tae, Micky Guyton, and Lauren Alaina.
The song is from her new movie Breakthrough
Metz has performed before on This Is Us, including delivering a memorable rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.” But the ACM Awards marked her live TV singing debut. Wearing a striking blue gown, Metz belted out the song, which is from the soundtrack of her upcoming movie Breakthrough.
Breakthough tells the story of devout Christian Joyce Smith (Metz), whose adopted teenage son John falls into an icy lake but is miraculously revived after being declared clinically dead. The movie is based on Smith’s memoir The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection.
Breakthrough, which also stars Dennis Haysbert, Topher Grace, Josh Lucas, and Marcel Ruiz, is in theaters April 17.
The songwriter had some doubts about Metz’s singing ability
Famed songwriter Diane Warren penned “I’m Standing With You,” and she initially doubted whether Metz had the vocal chops to pull off the song.
“To be honest, I was like, ‘Oh, f*ck — an actress who wants to sing? Yikes,” Warren told the Hollywood Reporter.
But Warren soon changed her tune.
“I met her in the studio and left while they recorded. I came back in a few hours and she blew me away. I was so shocked. She’s so soulful and has a great voice. I believe her.”
Following her debut on stage at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Metz is getting praise from other music pros like Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth, who tweeted her approval, writing “you just nailed your first live tv singing performance.”
Will Metz release an album?
Metz’s performance has fans wondering if she’ll eventually release more music. While it doesn’t sound like there’s an album in the works just yet, the 38-year-old actress told Glamour it’s something she’d be interested in doing in the future.
“I really want to do maybe some pop-country or country,” she said. “I would love to produce some film, maybe eventually be in a musical and have a production company.”
For now, she’s just basking in the glow of her successful performance. “As an actress, you’re not always taken seriously as a singer,” she told In Touch Weekly. “You can’t always cross over, whether it’s drama to comedy or an actress to musician. I can’t even believe it’s happening. I really, really can’t. It’s been a gift on top of a gift.”
“It’s one of those bucket list moments you didn’t think would actually happen,” she added. “Standing on stage with five incredible women who are brilliant vocalists and artists is beyond thrilling.”
