How Chrissy Teigen and John Legend met

It’s hard to imagine a world when Teigen and Legend weren’t the most iconic couple in Hollywood. The theory that “opposites attract” couldn’t be more true when it comes to the happy couple’s relationship. While Teigen is loud, goofy, and an open book, Legend is soft-spoken, introverted, and reserved. Teigen is extremely carefree while Legend seems a lot more serious. Still, despite their differences (or perhaps because of them,) these two were drawn to each other at once.

The two met on the set of Legend’s music video for “Stereo.” In the music video, Teigen plays Legend’s groupie, and they share some intimate moments on-screen. Teigen says they shot for twelve hours, and all the heat between them seemed to get hotter by the minute. Because of this, when the shooting day was over, Teigen tells Cosmopolitan that she mustered up the courage to visit Legend at his hotel. The two ended up bonding over In N’ Out Burger while spending the night together. The rest is history.

Chrissy Teigen made a wish that John Legend would be the man she’d end up with

During their first trip to Lake Como, Italy, (where the couple got married and filmed the “All of Me” music video,) Teigen made a wish about Legend. She describes the moment in a beautiful Instagram post. Teigen says,

“Back to where it all began – Lake Como, Italy – first came here in 2007. A boat tour guide took us to a little spot on the lake and told us to make a wish. I asked for this to be the man I marry and have children with. I think John asked for the most perfect bite of cacio e pepe. Both came true, and here we are.”

It’s safe to say that Teigen was falling for Legend after the two began to spend a significant amount of time together. Yet despite her feelings, she knew that she had to “play it cool” with a guy like him, who was just getting used to the spotlight. She tells Cosmopolitan,

“The worst thing you can do is try to lock someone like that down early on, then have them think, ‘There’s so much more out there.’ I played it cool for a long time. Never once did I ask, ‘What are we?’ Marriage was never my goal because I’ve never been very traditional. I was just happy to be with him.”

Yet regardless of how “cool” Teigen played the game, there was an unfortunate point where the couple broke up due to stress on Legend’s end. Teigen tells Cosmopolitan,

“I was on tour with him and he’d gotten sick. He was feeling bummed and stressed out. He was like, ‘I can’t be in a relationship right now.’ That lasted for one day. Literally, a day. I knew it came from a place other than us not working. It was the stress of him having to maybe cancel a show, and he had never been in a real relationship—or so he says now. I always joke, ‘Remember when you tried to break up with me?’ He’s like, ‘Yes, sorry. Big mistake.’”
