‘Community’ Reunion: The Cast Is All In For Making 6 Seasons And A Movie A Reality
One of the greatest network comedies in recent years, Community was a massive hit on NBC. An inside joke among fans is the idea of the show going for six seasons and finishing with a movie. Here’s why nearly everyone is on board with this plan.
Community aired for six seasons
The show Community first began airing on NBC in 2009. The comedy follows a group of students at Greendale Community College in Colorado, who all come together as a study group for a Spanish course. However, they quickly became much more than that, and their friendship grows and changes over the course of the series.
Initially, the cast was comprised of Joel McHale as Jeff Winger, Gillian Jacobs as Britta Perry, Danny Pudi as Abed Nadir, Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirly Bennett, Alison Brie as Annie Edison, Donald Glover as Troy Barnes, and Chevy Chase as Pierce Hawthorne. Additional cast members, like Ken Jeong’s Ben Chang and Jim Rash’s Craig Pelton, were recurring characters to begin with.
The cast recently got together
As stated, the core group changed quite a bit throughout the series’ run. By the end, Glover and Chase had departed the series, and Rash and Chang had larger roles. Other recurring actors joined in recurring roles, including Paget Brewster as Frankie Dart and Jonathan Banks as Buzz Hickey.
But at the recent reunion, it was the final core members who all got together, along with series creator Dan Harmon. McHale, Brie, Jacobs, Jeong, Brown, Pudi, and Rash were all there to talk about the series at Vulture Festival.
The ‘Community’ reunion highlights
Getting this group of hilarious people back together is pretty exciting. While they were together, they reminisced about many of the incredible moments they shared on screen. And some even reenacted them.
Rash took the stage and performed his rap from Season 5, Episode 9 of the series, “VCR Maintenance and Educational Publishing.” In the show, he’s dressed as a peanut, in honor of a PayDay candy bar, as the focus of his rap is paychecks. It’s pretty incredible to watch.
What’s ‘6 seasons and a movie’?
Community did not have an easy run. The first two seasons went off fairly smoothly and were highly praised. However, during the third season, NBC had the series take an unscheduled hiatus, which scared fans, who began to promote the online cry of “#sixseasonsandamovie,” referencing a line of the Abed’s from the show.
The series returned, but for Season 4, Harmon was replaced as showrunner. Chase left, and Harmon was reinstated for Season 5. Then, Glover left, and the show was canceled by NBC. A sixth and final season aired on the short-lived service Yahoo Screen.
Dan Harmon on a ‘Community’ movie
The topic of the final part of the cry was addressed at Vulture Fest. Harmon said, “I don’t know how this starts,” in regards to getting a movie off the ground, and after Brie suggested he had to be the one to do it, he said, “Yeah, then I write it and half the people are like, ‘meh, I don’t want to do it.'” However, everyone present agreed that they’re on board.
Harmon still seemed a bit unsure, mentioning his other series, Rick and Morty and about how he was previously fired. Regardless, he loves the series as is. “This is absolutely the thing that I will always be the most proud of,” he said. It’s sweet to hear, but we have to say: We’ll always want more Community.
