Is ‘Contagion’ on Netflix? How to Stream This Viral Thriller

If you want to watch something a little spooky, though, some fans are turning to the thriller Contagion, starring Matt Damon and Kate Winslet. 

Is Contagion on Netflix or Hulu? Here’s how to stream this 2011 release. 

Is ‘Contagion’ on Netflix?

Released almost 10 years ago, this thriller tells the story of an unexpected disease that kills one woman after her trip abroad. The disease quickly snowballs out of control, creating a global pandemic and chaos amongst people in the United States. Contagion stars Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Winslet amongst others. 

Now, with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic calling for self-quarantine, masks, and social distancing, some horror movie fans are wondering how they can stream the 2011 release, Contagion. Unfortunately, the movie is not available on Netflix, though the streaming platform does have movies like The Platform, Outbreak, and 2012.

‘Contagion’ is available for streaming on Cinemax 

With a subscription to the “American Premium Cable Network,” Cinemax, fans can watch the 2011 release. However, if you’re looking to stream this movie on your laptop or other devices, you’re in luck. This network comes with “Max Go,” a service that gives subscribers access to the entire Cinemax library on any device.

For Hulu subscribers, movies available on Cinemax are streamable for an additional charge. That same add-on is an option for those who watch television shows and movies on Amazon Prime. 

Of course, the movie is available for purchase digitally and physically. It is also available for rent on platforms like YouTube and Amazon. The DVD and Blu-Ray versions are available at retailers like Barnes & Noble, Walmart, and Target, although it is one of the best-sellers at the moment and may be out of stock at select stores.

Is ‘Contagion’ actually accurate to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic?

How close is Contagion to what we’re actually experiencing right now? For some, it is uncomfortably close. Still, Dr. Mark Smolinski, the medical adviser behind the thriller. Prior to Contagion, the best-known movie which touched on infectious diseases was Outbreak, starring Dustin Hoffman.

“The science was awful,” Dr. Mark Smolinski said during an interview with CNBC, who is now the president of Ending Pandemics, a non-profit helping mitigate biological threats. “They basically created a vaccine overnight.”

Some viewers, however, took to social media, sharing their connections between Contagion and the coronavirus pandemic. One Twitter user said, “when I said I wanted my life to be a movie, I did not mean Contagion.”

“If you ever wanted to live a movie well that’s been achieved, Contagion is a freakin accurate prophecy that no one saw coming,” another Twitter user noted.
