Could Jennifer Lopez Be the Next Batman?

Batman is one of the most iconic and versatile superheroes of all time. On the silver screen, he has been played by Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Will Arnett and Ben Affleck – all of whom gave the Caped Crusader their own distinct spin. Now another Hollywood A-lister has talked about playing the superhero: Jennifer Lopez. Here’s what the iconic actress had to say about playing the part.

Robert Pattinson tells Jennifer Lopez she’d be perfect for the role

Variety recently published a conversation between Jennifer Lopez and Robert Pattinson. The subject of Pattinson’s upcoming role as the title character in The Batman was brought up, with Lopez saying “I think you’d be a great Batman. An awesome Batman.” Pattinson replied “You would be as well.” The actress then said “I could be Batman. Why not? I think as an actor, it would be fun to explore.”

If she ever took on the role, Lopez would be filling the shoes of Ben Affleck. Affleck starred as the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League and briefly reprized the role in Suicide Squad. Lopez playing Batman would mark the first time in movie history a superhero was played by both members of a former couple.

It’s not clear at this point how serious Lopez’s comments were. Perhaps she does have some intention to seek out the role after Pattinson is done with it or perhaps this is the last time anyone will think of her playing Batman. If she were to play Batman, would she play him as a man or as a woman pretending to be a man a la Disney’s Mulan?

Batman or Batwoman?

The singer’s off-the-cuff remark raises the question of whether or not she’ll be more interested in playing Batman or Batwoman. In Batman movies so far, the Caped Crusader has been everything from a brooding hero with an empowered exoskeleton to a goofy Lego minifigure, but he’s never been played by a woman. However, the idea of a female Batman has been done before – to a degree. In the 1950s, Batwoman was introduced as a love interest for Batman.

Batwoman ak.a. Kate Kane has essentially the same powers as Batman and a similar outfit. Much like Batman, she is a wealthy vigilante who wants to use her affluence to help fight crime. The similarities essentially end there. Batwoman is much more violent than her male counterpart and is addicted to adrenaline rushes. Although the title role of the Batwoman TV series will be played by Ruby Rose, Lopez’s comments could lead to her involvement in the show.

There are precedents for Lopez taking on the iconic role. When Captain Marvel was initially introduced, the character was a man. However, Brie Larson played a female version of the character in Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. Hailee Steinfeld played a female superhero who is very similar to Spider-Man named Spider-Gwen in Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse. It remains to be seen if Lopez will become part of that exclusive club.
