Could Meghan Markle Be a Bridesmaid in Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ Wedding?
Meghan Markle may now be a member of the royal family, but she still has famous friends from her time as an actress. One of her closest BFFs is Priyanka Chopra, who she met at the annual Women in Television dinner hosted by Elle a few years back.
“We bonded as actors,” Chopra spilled to People. “We just became friends, like two girls would.” She was nothing but supportive of Markle throughout her engagement and marriage to Prince Harry, even earning a spot as a guest at their royal wedding on May 19, 2018.
Before Harry proposed to Markle, Chopra told Wendy Williams she was pulling for their engagement. “I hope [they get married],” she said. “She seems happy. I think they look great together.”
Markle approves of Chopra’s engagement
Now that Chopra has become engaged to musician Nick Jonas, Markle seems to reciprocating the same kind of support. Chopra and Jonas only dated for two months before agreeing to tie the knot, but according to E! News, Markle has given her stamp of approval. An insider claims she’s “very excited” for the couple. “Everyone is very happy and they are definitely a great match,” the source added.
No matter what, we’re sure Markle will be in attendance at Chopra and Jonas’ wedding. However, if Chopra wanted the duchess to be a bridesmaid, would she even be allowed? Apparently she could, but certain expectations could make it a bit complicated.
Things could get complicated
According to royal reporter Omid Scobie, “There is no protocol that dictates whether an adult female member of the British royal family can take on the role of a bridesmaid or maid of honor at a non-royal’s wedding.”
Although no rule says she can’t be a bridesmaid, here’s where it gets tricky. “It is an unlikely scenario for one simple reason: A female royal would not be expected to walk behind a ‘commoner.’ This is why in the past we saw Pippa Middleton as Duchess Kate’s maid of honor, but when Pippa got married Kate read a prayer.”
Scobie pointed out that if Markle were to serve as Chopra’s bridesmaid, “There’s also the risk of taking all the attention off the bride herself!” He added, “In June, all eyes were on Sweden’s Princess Madeleine instead of her close childhood friend getting married when she served as a bridesmaid.”
No rules say Markle can’t be a bridesmaid
We’re sure Markle would completely understand if Chopra decided to invite her as a guest instead of as a bridesmaid. At the end of the day, it would be up to the bride and royal bridesmaid to make that call. “Should a female member of the royal family choose to take on a bridal party role at a friend’s wedding, it would be her own decision,” Scobie explained. “There’s no rule that wouldn’t allow this and she certainly wouldn’t need permission or guidance from Palace aides.”
Harry is actually serving as his friend Charlie Van Straubenzee’s best man in his Aug. 4, 2018 wedding, so it’s not completely unheard of for a royal to join a non-royal’s wedding party. Plus, Harry could probably share some pointers with Markle about his experience in trying not to steal the spotlight.
