Could This ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Celebrity Be an Early Frontrunner?

Celebrities took to the stage with their partners on Monday night’s season 28 premiere of Dancing with the Stars. The show was packed full of drama, injuries, and sequins. There is a Mirrorball Trophy at stake, and one celebrity danced as if they’ve already won it.

Now that celebrities are coupled up with pros, here’s what went down during the premiere. Bachelorette, Hannah Brown, danced the cha-cha to “I Want to Dance With Somebody,” with pro, Alan Bersten.

Nickelodeon star, Kel Mitchell danced the tango to “Sucker,” with pro, Witney Carson. The Office celebrity, Kate Flannery, and her partner, Pasha Pashkov, also danced the cha-cha to “Works Hard for the Money.”

It wouldn’t be DWTS with an NBA superstar. Lamar Odem performed the foxtrot to “Feelin’ Good” with pro, Peta Murgatroyd, while country singer, Lauren Alaina and her partner, Gleb Savchenko, danced the cha-cha to “Man, I Feel Like a Woman.”

In a last-minute move, Sailor Brinkley-Cook stepped in for her mom (who injured her arm during rehearsals), Christie, to dance with pro, Val Chmerkovskiy. They danced the foxtrot to “Uptown Girl.”

Queer Eye’s Karamo Brown and pro, Jenna Johnson, performed the salsa to “Juice,” while boxing legend, Ray Lewis, and his partner, Cheryl Burke, took the stage with the salsa to “Hot in Herre.”

The Supremes’ Mary Wilson danced the foxtrot to “Baby Love” with partner, Brandon Armstrong, and Fifth Harmony’s Ally Brooke danced the cha-cha to “Work From Home,” with Sasha Farber.

And finally, former White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, and pro, Lindsay Arnold, danced the salsa to “Spice of Your Life,” with Dawson’s Creek heartthrob, James Van Der Beek tangoed to “Whatever It Takes” with partner, Emma Slater.

Which celebrity could be the ‘DWTS’ season 28 frontrunner?

Van Der Beek closed out the show and thank goodness he did. With the highest score of the night (21/30), Van Der Beek and Slater wowed the judges with their high-energy performance.

“What a way to end the night! We have a leading man in the house,” judge, Carrie Ann Inaba exclaimed. She praised his “style, technique, and flavor.

You don’t have to be a hardcore Van Der Beek advocate to appreciate his performance (I’m talking to you, Pacey Witter fans). If this is how he competes on episode one, imagine what he’ll do the rest of the season.

What else has Van Der Beek appeared in?

Aside from playing Dawson Leery on the iconic show, Dawson’s Creek, Van Der Beek has also appeared in dozens of other shows such as Pose, One Tree Hill, and Modern Family. The father of five impressed many, giving hope to longtime fans DWTS Season 28 will be a good one.

Whether Van Der Beek takes home the Mirrorball Trophy or not, it’s clear he and Slater are in it to win it and we’re totally here for it.
