‘Counting On’: An Old Photo Reminds Viewers That Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard’s Views Are Still ‘Just As Bad’ As They Once Were
Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard have broken away from Duggar’s parents, Michelle and Jim Bob. Duggar and her husband wed back in 2014, and since then, the two have been separating themselves from Michelle and Jim Bob’s grasp.
Nowadays, Duggar and Dillard are praised for their more liberal attitudes — but an old photo seemingly reminds viewers that the two haven’t changed that much.
Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard broke away from the family back in 2017
When Duggar and Dillard were first married, they abided by the Duggar family rules. The two did have some freedom when they moved to South America, and it’s possible that that’s what prompted them to challenge their parents. The couple recently told People that they left the show because Michelle and Jim Bob had a hold on them that they couldn’t escape.
“Our control to choose what jobs we were allowed to accept and even where we were allowed to live was taken away from us,” Duggar revealed, and Dillard added that the couple couldn’t see certain “opportunities” come to life because Michelle and Jim Bob wouldn’t allow it.
Growing up, Duggar was homeschooled and required to wear long skirts for modesty. She didn’t have friends outside of her parents’ religious circle and wasn’t allowed to date. Now, Duggar wears shorts, has her nose pierced, and sends her son, Israel, to public school.
An old photo has viewers thinking the two haven’t changed all that much
Though Duggar has certainly made progress from the staunch conservative views she was raised with, some viewers suggest an old photo on her husband’s Instagram proves the two aren’t as changed as they want to seem.
A post from May 2018 on Dillard’s Instagram shows his son building a wall out of blocks. “Israel helping Trump build ‘The Wall,’” Dillard’s caption read, complete with a “fingers crossed” and smiling emoji. A critic of the show posted the image to Reddit, where others discussed that Duggar and Dillard are “just as bad as all the rest of them” — meaning they still share the same views as Duggar’s family.
“The grossest thing about this is that they lived in Central America. They saw these people, lived with them, heard their stories,” one user wrote. “So much hypocrisy here to unpack,” someone else commented. “Wasn’t this after they lived in Central America??? That’s in extra poor taste, wowww,” another user added.
It’s possible the couple has grown more in the last two years
While the post does show some hypocrisy, it’s also possible that Dillard and Duggar’s minds have expanded even further in the last two and a half years. The two were only just branching out in May 2018; it was less than a year after they left the show. However, viewers make a point that, if the Dillards views still stand, they could be painting an untrue picture of themselves.
Critics did notice that Duggar follows Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on Instagram, which shows she could be open to expanding her mind and learning about all sides. Fans have requested that Dillard remove the image from his account; it’s unclear if he will.
