‘Counting On’: Did Derick Dillard Just Reveal That He Is a ‘Star Wars’ Fan?

Derick Dillard and Jill Duggar seem pretty dedicated to the process of distancing themselves from her famous family. In early November, Jill and Derick sat down with People to discuss the reason behind their decision to set some familial boundaries. Then, the pair sat down for a Q&A that they uploaded to YouTube. Derick, for his part, seems especially interested in making sure everyone knows he didn’t grow up like the Duggars. He even announced that he was a Star Wars fan to prove it.

Derick Dillard has seen all of the Star Wars movies

Derick and Jill’s YouTube Q&A contained some truly interesting tidbits of information. The pair discussed the way their courtship was played up for the cameras. They talked about how they didn’t consider their early relationship a courtship, and how they’d likely allow their children to take a different marriage path. One of the less juicy pieces of information, however, proved, once again, that Derick comes from a very different world than Jill.

Derick stated, during the video, that he has seen every single one of the Star Wars movies, and that his parents were a fan of the franchise. There are 9 Star Wars movies in the official franchise, as well as two stories and a TV installment. The first film, Star Wars: Episode IV-A New Hope, was released in 1977. The three most recent installments were released after Derick and Jill tied the knot in 2014.

Why is Derick Dillard’s Star Wars admission such a big deal?

It really shouldn’t be shocking that a man in his 20s has seen all of the Star Wars flicks. Presumably, most American adults can say the same. At the very least, they could sit down to binge the entire franchise if they so wanted. What makes Derick’s admission interesting is the fact that Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar spent years carefully curating the people their 19 children interact with and the media they consumed.

The Duggars didn’t have cable in their home and only allowed a select number of movies and television shows to be seen. In early specials, for example, several of the girls were interested in Little House on the Prairie, a show that went off the air years before any of the Duggar kids were born. The books they were allowed to read and the music they were allowed to listen to was greatly limited, too. It is safe to say that Star Wars likely was not on the family’s list of approved movies.

Derick Dillard turned out to be far more “wordly” than the Duggar family thought

Derick and Jill seem to be living their lives on their terms, and it appears to be the reason for the family’s rift with the Duggars. Not only do the pair watch television shows and movies that wouldn’t be approved by Jim Bob and Michelle, but they are breaking a ton of other family rules. Jill has a nose ring, wears pants, and appears to drink alcohol on occasion. The Dillards also admitted to using birth control to limit the size of their family.

Fans didn’t see Jill’s rebellion coming. For years, she seemed to be the Duggar daughter most interested in adhering to her parents’ rules, so what happened? Family followers believe that Derick is the reason for Jill’s transformation. His upbringing may have played a role, too. In short, Derick, while raised religious, was not raised in the same ultra-conservative Christian ministry as the Duggar family. He attended public school, went on to a public university, and lived independently for years before marrying Jill. In short, Derick Dillard was far more worldly than the Duggars, and from the looks of it, has been more than Jim Bob bargained for.
