‘Counting On’ Fans Question What the Future Holds For the Show As the Kids Get Older
Counting On was launched on TLC after Josh Duggar’s sexual abuse scandal caused the network to end 19 Kids and Counting. And since then, fans have watched the Duggar kids grow up before their eyes. But now that the show has run through 10 seasons, some can’t help but wonder what’s coming next for the family — and how long they’ll be able to sustain viewers based on the lives they live.
‘Counting On’ has become one of TLC’s longest-running shows
The Duggar family is one of the largest families in the United States, and watching Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar raise so many kids has managed to captivate viewers. 19 Kids and Counting first premiered back in 2008 (it was 17 Kids and Counting at the time), and a dozen years later, the show is still on the air.
In 2015, things weren’t looking good for the family as Josh Duggar’s sexual abuse scandal came to light. But TLC regrouped and launched a new show featuring Jill and Jessa Duggar, called Jill and Jessa: Counting On. These days, the show is just called Counting On and focuses mainly on the married couples raising their own kids.
The show draws to a very specific fan base
The Duggar family is unlike most modern American families. The Duggars are extremely religious and politically conservative, which doesn’t sit well with everyone around the country. While many people do have a deep connection to their religions, and there are certainly many conservative families around the country, the Duggars’ lifestyle (no dating, skirts-only for women, etc.) doesn’t resonate with most of the country’s population.
While some people watch the show because they connect with the Duggars’ lifestyle, others watch it simply because it intrigues them.
Some can’t help but wonder how long the show will go on
The show’s followers often take to Reddit to discuss different aspects of the family, though most topics have a negative connotation. And the show’s future recently came up in a Reddit discussion. One user asked how much longer the show will go on with the family essentially doing all of the same things season after season (more weddings, more babies, etc.). Fans had mixed thoughts on what they believed the future holds for the Duggars.
“I do see them lasting for a couple more years, but not long enough for [Josh and Anna Duggar’s kids] to have children,” one user wrote. “It’s so boring. I wonder how much longer it would last as the content seems to be the exact same every episode,” someone else commented. “There are enough kids around to keep that cycle going for at least several more seasons, so I assume TLC will keep auto-pilot producing episodes for as long as they can,” another user wrote.
Fans think some spinoffs will eventually be in the works
Though it’s unclear what exactly will happen with the show, fans don’t seem to think it will end right now. However, there have been fan discussions about whether TLC will choose to form a spinoff for any of the family members. It’s possible Joy Duggar and Austin Forsyth’s house-flipping business could warrant a spinoff show, and fans seem to think Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo would make a great spinoff couple as well. Time will tell what TLC decides to do next.
