‘Counting On’ Fans Think Joseph and Kendra Duggar Need to Get With Modern Times After Posting This Photo of Their Son
The Duggars have been on our radar for years thanks to shows like 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On, and fans certainly have their favorites. Many love Jinger Duggar and her husband, Jeremy Vuolo, for being unafraid to embark on a new life in California, and fans adore seeing Jessa Duggar with her new baby girl on Instagram. Unfortunately, even the fan favorites can’t catch a break from criticism — and this time, it’s Joseph Duggar and his wife, Kendra, who’re getting the flack.
Joe and Kendra recently celebrated their son’s first birthday, and they added a number of adorable photos of him to their Instagram. Unfortunately, fans pointed out how they’re perpetuating potentially harmful gender norms.
The Duggars are known for reinforcing harmful gender stereotypes
We know the Duggars best for their strict family rules regarding their dress code and dating, and it’s no surprise that they treat men and women completely differently, too. The family believes the man is the ruler of the home, and they also don’t approve of women working outside of the house as well, as women are responsible for raising the kids and keeping up with the home. We also can’t forget that Michelle Duggar has stated before that it’s vital for the wife to provide intimacy for the husband whenever he desires.
The Duggars are known for having a code word that shames women, too, which further perpetuates sexist ideals. If any of the Duggars see a woman dressed provocatively, they whisper “Nike” to warn the boys to avert their gaze. Cosmopolitan reports in the book Growing Up Duggar, the daughters wrote, “That’s a signal to the boys, and even to Dad, that they should nonchalantly drop their eyes and look down at their shoes as we walk past her. … It’s meant to help keep the guys’ eyes from seeing things they shouldn’t be seeing.”
Joseph and Kendra Duggar just celebrated their son’s first birthday
Joseph and Kendra have been the hot topic of conversation as of late since Kendra announced her second pregnancy. She gave birth to their son, Garrett, in June 2018, Us Weekly notes — and it was announced in April that they’re pregnant once more. “We are very happy that our little family will welcome a new addition later this year. Children really are a blessing from God!” Joe and Kendra told the publication.
Garrett just turned a year old, too — and the happy couple’s posting all about it on their Instagram. “Happy 1st birthday Garrett,” the couple captioned their post. “I can’t believe one year ago that you entered the world. You have brought so much joy just seeing you explore all of the firsts in life! You love to explore with your little fingers, little hands and little feet. We love you so much.”
Many fans aren’t happy with them after this Instagram post
Joe and Kendra posted this cute photo set of Garrett playing with a twig to their Instagram — and fans had a lot of opinions. They captioned the post, “He’s such a boy. some of his favorite toys are found outside. That little twig entertained him for longer than his toys normally do! [sic].”
Unfortunately, some were quick to point out that calling Garrett “such a boy” for playing with twigs was perpetuating unnecessary gender stereotypes. As one fan pointed out, “All kids do this. There is literally no difference in boys and girls personalities as infants and toddlers. You’re just pushing this onto your kids like it was pushed onto you. So destructive for children who don’t fit those moulds [sic].”
Others took to Kendra and Joe’s post to reinforce the parents’ behavior, however. As another fan commented, “Beautiful….kind of sad and pathetic at the same time that all these loons show up to express (force) their opinions of political correctness and stalk your posts for their trigger words.” Another added, “God made boy’s and girls different for a reason. Embrace it!! [sic].” No matter what critique the couple receives, it looks like they (along with all the other Duggars) won’t be changing their mindset anytime soon.
