‘Counting On’: Is Jill Duggar Addicted to ‘The Gram’?

Jill Duggar’s Instagram feed is not without controversy. The mother of two has pissed off fans in a lot of different ways over the last several months. She’s posted nonstop pictures that praise her husband for menial tasks. She’s posted photos that give way too many details about her sex life, and she’s acted pretty obliviously to typical etiquette when it comes to death and funerals. The more she posts, the more controversy she creates, but that isn’t turning the former Counting On star away from the platform. In fact, it seems to be drawing her further into the digital world.

Is Jill Duggar addicted to ‘The Gram’?

Jill may be addicted to Instagram. She would not be the first, nor the last person who has found themselves utterly obsessed with the photosharing platform and the praise (and the condemnation) it can bring. In the previous 24 hours, Jill has added eight clips to her Instagram stories. That’s not out of the ordinary for her, either. Jill’s Instagram story refreshes daily with family snapshots, sponsored posts, and music clips.

Her last post, however, was nearly three days ago. In the post, Jill shared a photo of a child’s casket. Fans lambasted her for broadcasting the private grief of a family that just lost an infant. For now, she appears to be hanging low with adding actual snapshots to her profile, but that hasn’t pulled her away from her the apps story feature.

Is she just bored with her life?

Some fans wonder if Jill might just be so bored with her life that posting on Instagram is the only exciting thing she has going on. After all, the mother of two lives pretty far from her family, and she’s left carless at least part of the time she spends at home. She doesn’t have a job outside the house, and her friend group seems to consist of a few random neighborhood moms and her sisters, all of whom are a little busy raising their own kids. A few recent meltdowns have some fans wondering if Jill is enjoying motherhood the way she thought she would.

Jill’s Instagram usage seems to have ticked up right around the time the family abandoned their missionary work, and her husband, Derick Dillard, decided to attend law school. Her increased activity also seems to coincide with the family being fired from Counting On, and the alleged rift that occurred between the Duggar clan because of it.

Is Instagram addictive?

Instagram is actually addictive. Sure, you may not think of in the same way you would think of an addiction to drugs or alcohol, but there are behaviors displayed by some people over social media that absolutely fall into the definition of obsession, and apparently, that’s no accident.

According to Business Insider, there are several reasons why the social media platform is addictive. Nir Eyal, the author of Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products, sat down with Busines Insider to discuss what makes the app so addictive. According to Eyal, the act of taking pictures is habit-forming in and of itself, but when you add the instant reward of positive feedback from those pictures, the habit is intensified. Eyal also notes that “FOMO” is a part of the platform’s success. Fear of missing out is a genuine thing. Taking a picture and viewing other images ensures you’ll never actually miss out again.
